Discover Natal
Rio Grande do Norte’s capital is known for its beautiful beaches, clean air, and its reputation for being the safest capital city in Brazil. It’s a popular destination for coastal tourists who want to explore the breath-taking beaches along the Atlantic coast and its inland sand dunes. Natal boasts the second largest urban park in Brazil and is home to the world’s largest cashew tree. Although Natal isn’t as famous for its nightlife, each December it throws Brazil’s largest off-season carnival: the Carnatal.
Airports in Natal
Natal is served by Augusto Severo International Airport (NAT) which is 20km away from the city centre. The airport has some shops and restaurants, some of which are open 24 hours a day. Internet access at the airport costs R$8 per hour.
A new airport is currently being built to serve Natal and other areas and is located 25km from downtown Natal. Greater Natal International Airport is currently being built in Sao Goncalo do Amarante and is expected to start operating in April 2014. It’s expected to be the busiest airport in Brazil’s North East once completed.
Airlines that Fly to Natal
Direct international flights to Natal are operated by Arkefly from Amsterdam, Meridiana from Milan and Rome, and TAP Portugal from Lisbon.
From Australia, connecting flights are available to Natal. Qatar, Qantas, United, Air Canada, Delta, Emirates, Virgin Australia, and Air China fly from Sydney and Melbourne.
Augusto Severo Airport also receives a lot of domestic travel, with regional airlines Avianca Brazil, Azul Brazilian Airlines, GOL Airlines and TAM Airlines flying from vities such as Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Recife.
Getting into Natal
By Local Bus
Public buses run frequently to Natal from the airport. Catch the Natal bus outside the airport terminal for R$2.60 to get to the city centre. It’s also possible to get a bus directly to Ponta Negra by crossing the pedestrian bridge. Lines 43 and 56 will take you to Ponte Negra for R$2.20. The urban buses run from 4:35am to 11:15pm during weekdays, 4:35am to 11:10pm on Saturdays, and 4:30am to 11:15pm on Sundays.
By Taxi
Taxis are stationed outside the airport 24 hours a day, and operate on a fixed price rather than on a meter. A journey to the tourist districts of Natal will cost around R$43.
By Car
Car rentals are also available at the airport if you want to head out and explore Rio Grande do Norte.
