The Territory of Christmas Island or simply Christmas Island is a sovereign territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean. It has a population of 2,072 permanent residents who live in a number of 'settlement areas' found in the northern tip of the island namely Silver City, Poon Saan, Drumsite, and the capital, Flying Fish Cove. Being a territory of Australia, the island's government is under the National Government of Australia, which is a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. The country's Federal constitutional monarchy is headed by the administrator and Shire President, who are both under the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and the territories' Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. The island is called 'Christmas Island' because it was discovered on Christmas day in 1643.

The Christmas Island Airport is a Category 4 international airport fit for all arrivals, including those from Australia. It is owned by the Department of Infrastructure and Transport, but is operating under contract by Toll Remote Logistics. Currently, the sole airline travelling to the destination is Virgin Australia. Virgin Australia has regular flights from Cocos (Keeling) Islands and Perth, an Australian city located some 500 kilometres from the islands. Occasional charters from other airlines such as Malaysia Airlines and SilkAir occur from time to time.
