Discover Christmas Island

The Territory of Christmas Island or simply Christmas Island is a sovereign territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean. It has a population of 2,072 permanent residents who live in a number of 'settlement areas' found in the northern tip of the island namely Silver City, Poon Saan, Drumsite, and the capital, Flying Fish Cove. Being a territory of Australia, the island's government is under the National Government of Australia, which is a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. The country's Federal constitutional monarchy is headed by the administrator and Shire President, who are both under the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and the territories' Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. The island is called 'Christmas Island' because it was discovered on Christmas day in 1643.
What to see & do
Dubbed as the 'Galapagos of the Indian Ocean', tourists and travellers will delight on the island's rich natural resources and beaches – which can also be compared to the premier French Riviera or even the Caribbean. Although not developed and containing only two or three destinations as of the moment, Christmas Island is still worth the visit especially if looking for an escape: the right amount of quiet and peace to energise for the many work weeks ahead. Christmas Island's geographic isolation and history of minimal human disturbance has led to a high level of endemism among its flora and fauna, making a highly interesting scene of pungent flowers and wild animals. Towards the coasts meanwhile, the blue seas crawl to the sandy beaches in a rather serene way, creating a warm and relaxing vista.
Not only does the island serve as a destination, it also serves as a research facility to many interested scientists and naturalists who take trips to the island and study the ecosystem in the area, and a home to Chinese who have sought refuge in the area. Tourists will enjoy visiting its few cities up north, starting with Flying Fish Cove. There, travellers may experience the local scene, from the cuisine to the cultural festivals that are painted and tainted with Chinese and Australian practises. Other than the above-mentioned activities, travellers may also enjoy watching the red crab migration, trekking into the Christmas Island National Park and even bird watching.
How to get around Christmas Island
Travellers are better off renting cars in this area, as there is no definite public transportation system in Christmas Island. 4x4s can save travellers from the hassle – as this type of vehicle can venture into almost any road condition.
