The Ciampino-G.B. Pastine International Airport is one of two international air transit hubs for the city of Rome. It’s one of the oldest airports in Italy, but its facilities are fairly up to date. Expect to find a decent amount of restaurants and cafes, as well as a number of retail shops, including duty free. You can access cash points, information desks, and there are nurseries available for those travelling with children.

Airlines to Rome

This is a very busy international airport, and a celebrated city, so you will find lots of major carriers fly to Rome. There aren’t any direct flights from Australia to Rome, but you can find plenty of airlines that will fly to larger international hubs, which can then deliver you to Rome. Some of the carriers that fly into this city are Qantas, Emirates, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Alitalia, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada, Delta and Condor.

Getting into Rome

By taxi

You can grab a taxi just outside of the terminal, it is recommended that you ensure the meter is running when you take the journey into the city centre. Prices can vary depending on where you are going and traffic, but it is an expensive way to travel. Expect to pay around 30-40EUR ($45-60).

By public transport

The public transportation however is much more reasonable. There is a bus (Route 720) that runs a little infrequently into the main bus station of the city, but is only 1.50EUR ($2.30). You can also get into the city via the rail service to the central station in Rome that also costs 1.50EUR.

By car

If you want to hire a car, there are there are several rental companies that operate out of Rome Ciampino Airport which you can access. These are: Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Thrifty and Sixt.

What can you do in Rome?

Travelling to Rome is like taking a step back in time through multiple eras. Discover the ancient Roman heart of this city which has been the Italian capital for over 2000 years.

However, the most celebrated Baroque structure in the city, is without a doubt the spectacular Trevi Fountain, immortalised on film in Fellini’s La Dolce Vita.

Of course, many come to Rome to explore the city-within-a-city, the Vatican. See some of the most acclaimed murals, sculptures and paintings in this ecclesiastical enclave of 44 hectares. See the stately St. Peter’s Basilica, and then wander beneath the works of Michelangelo in the world-famous Sistine Chapel.

However, there’s more to Rome than its stunning attractions, for this is a city that loves life, and visitors will find that shopping and eating here are among its greatest delights. Eat the staple food of the city, spaghetti carbonara, and finish the meal with a creamy gelato. Then stroll down the Via Condotti to see the biggest Italian names in fashion, or Via Frattina and Sistina for trendy, unique boutiques.

When should you go?

Romeis lucky enough to benefit from one of the most temperate climates in the country. However, it can be stifling in the summer (June-August) when both the tourists and the temperature peak. Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) however, are great times to visit, with averages between 18-22°C.
