Discover Aruba

Aruba is an island lying in the southern Caribbean Sea, situated some 1,600 kilometres west of the Lesser Antilles and 29 kilometres north of the coast of Venezuela. The island has an area of 178.91 square kilometres, and measures 32 kilometres long and 10 kilometres at its widest point. Aruba, along with the Netherlands, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten, is one of the four constituent countries that make up the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Aruba can be divided into the northeast and southwest coasts; the southwest coast is more abundant with white sand beaches and clear turquoise waters, while the northeast coast has more rough seas and a rocky coastline. The capital is the city of Oranjestad.

What to see & do

Mount Jamanota - Aruba is a mostly flat island with few hills. At 620 ft (188 m) Mount Jamanota is the highest point on the island, and is visible from just about anywhere in Aruba. The mountain is located in Arikok National Park.

Eagle Beach - The neighbourhood of Eagle Beach can be found in Oranjestad. It is well-known for the wide public beach and the many low-rise resorts lining it. It is considered to be one of the best beaches in the world, thanks to the warm and clear turquoise waters and the soft white sand. Eagle Beach is also one of the only two beaches apart from Baby Beach that allows nudity.

Dive Sites - Aruba has several fantastic dive sites, including the largest wreck in the South Caribbean, the SS Antilla. It was a German freighter from the beginning of World War II, and the German crew allowed it to sink rather than have it be confiscated. Other dive sites are the Italian-built lake tanker Pedernalis, the old wooden Danish fishing boat Rum Runner, and the shallow and tranquil Seagrass Fields.

Archaeological Museum of Aruba - The Archaeological Museum is dedicated to exhibiting the oldest parts of the island's rich cultural heritage. The permanent collection includes tools, ornaments, and other artefacts from the history and pre-history of the island.

How to get around within Aruba

Taxi cabs are perhaps the easiest way to get around. They are readily available at the airport and hotels, with fixed additional rates for certain factors such as additional luggage (only one item of luggage is allowed per person), and trips on Sundays, holidays, or between 11 PM and 7 AM. Bus service is also available, called 'Arubus', at very reasonable rates. These local buses can be found at the main station downtown or at the bus stops.
