Discover American Samoa

American Samoa is a group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean, halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. It is part of the same archipelago as the island country of Samoa, from which it is situated about 100 kilometres to the east, but is an unincorporated territory of the United States of America. American Samoa comprises of five main islands, the Manu'a Islands, Rose Atoll, Swains Island, and the largest, Tutuila, and two coral atolls. The territorial capital is Pago Pago, the official seat of the government is Fagatogo, and the largest village is Tafuna. American Samoans are bilingual and are fluent in both English and Samoan.

What to see & do

Shopping in American Samoa - The country has a wide range of retail outlets throughout Tutuila. The main shopping centres on the island are Fagatogo Square, the Laufou Center, and several shopping malls. Also found all over Tutuila are boutiques and general stores that offer traditional Samoan handicrafts.

Jean P. Hadyon Museum - The national museum contains many historical artefacts, collections, books, and gifts given to the Territory. It hosts a few local exhibitions throughout the year. One of the most significant items in the museum is a small American Samoa flag and three moon stones presented to the American Samoa Government by President Richard Nixon, after the return of one of the Apollo moon missions. The flag was literally carried to the moon and back by one of the astronauts.

National Park of American Samoa - The National Park of American Samoa provides a wide variety of hikes for different levels, through tropical rainforests, beach walks, and steep panoramic vistas.

Feleti Barstow Public Library - The Feleti Barstow library features a Pacific Collection Room with research materials on the Pacific, books on Samoan History, a computer room with Internet access, a Children's Room with a collection for young readers, and a collection of old photographs of American Samoa. The public library is open from Monday to Saturday.

How to get around

The largest island, Tutuila, is also the most populous and therefore has good and frequent, albeit unscheduled, public transportation. The most common method of travelling is by 'aiga' or family buses. You can hail a bus off the side of the street. If you're ready to get off, tap on the window a few times. Pay the driver on your way out. Taxi service is available as well and is the only option for travelling past 6 PM and on Sundays. The only exception of course is if you have a car rental; car hire agencies are located at or near the Tutuila Airport, and near the market in Fagatogo. Inter-island travel can be done by weekly ferry service from Pago Pago to the Manu'a Islands, or by taking a domestic flight.

How to get there

American Samoa has several airports, but the only international airport is Pago Pago International Airport, also known as Tafuna Airport. It is located at Tafuna, five kilometres southwest of the CBD of Pago Pago. Polynesian Airlines has flights between Pago Pago and Maota Airport on Savaii Island in Samoa. Inter Island Airways operates flights from Faleolo International Airport, and also in independent Samoa. Hawaiian Airlines operates twice a week from Honolulu.
