      FAQs about Cambodia holidays

Cambodia is a very affordable destination. Especially if you book during the shoulder seasons and are smart about snapping up accommodation and transport deals early. For cheap and tasty meals, look no further than the street food markets.
The dry season from November through April is the best time to visit Cambodia, especially if you plan to be outdoors. If you’re worried about the heat, aim for the cooler months of November to February. Or if you want to avoid crowds and can brave a little rain, May to September enjoy cheaper rates and fewer tourists.
For first-time visitors, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are the top destinations. Both offer easy access to popular historical, cultural and natural sites. For a more off-the-beaten-path experience, try Kep, Koh Rong or Battambang.
Check your government’s travel advisory before visiting Cambodia. Phone and bag snatching does happen, and there have been instances of drink spiking in busy bars. Keep an eye out for card-skimming devices on ATMs, and be mindful that flooding can occur during the rainy season.
Cambodia has a dual currency — the Cambodian riel (៛) and the US dollar ($). While it’s possible to pay anywhere using US dollars, local exchange rates tend to favour the riel. And though tipping isn’t expected, it’s good to check the bill and add 10% in restaurants if service isn’t included.
Khmer is the official language in Cambodia. Some key phrases to learn are ‘susadei’ (an informal hello), ‘arkun’ (thank you) and ‘chloy moy’ (cheers). English is also widely spoken, followed by French and Vietnamese. Most directional and shop signage is written in Khmer and English.
