Car Hire in Sydney

This information is correct as of June 2015.

Sydney, a city in Cape Breton Island, makes an excellent base in exploring Louisbourg and the Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia. This part of Canada features some lovely old houses and B&Bs, where one can enjoy a restful and laid-back vacation. Getting around here can be possible with a car rental, which can make it easier to navigate across the region.

Where to hire a car in Sydney

When looking for car rental options, you will find a modest number of available operators in the area. A big-name company such as Avis Car Rental offer their services near J.A. Douglas McCurdy Airport. It also has a branch in Sydney itself, as well as Budget Car & Truck Rental, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Alamo, National, and Discount Car and Truck Rentals. Smaller players also ply their trade here, making it convenient to look for available vehicles to check out the area.

The suitable vehicles to use here should be the kind that can traverse the rough terrain, especially if you will be going over the valleys of Annapolis and Cornwallis rivers. If you prefer keeping to the paved roads, a sedan or truck might do well enough, as you traverse the routes to the other communities.

What to expect when hiring a car from Sydney

Due to its relative isolation from the large cities of Canada, light traffic can be expected in Sydney. No toll roads and congestion charges also apply in the area due to the lack of traffic jams and the small number of people commuting around. When driving, you should still be on the lookout for cyclists, though, as some of them can go about the city and the nearby surroundings, especially during summer. Parking is also more or less limited, unless you reserve a space at a nearby B&B or an establishment in town.

Getting to your destination

There are a number of places to see from Sydney. Some of them are:

Sydney Mines
A town in Cape Breton Island, lying northeast of North Sydney, this area was once a major coal-producing community. You can explore the area and check out its various industries, as well as churches and other establishments that feature a laidback way of life in this part of Nova Scotia.

To get here, you need to head south on Charlotte Street towards Falmouth Street. Turn right at the 1st cross street and then make a left onto Esplanade/NS-4 W. Continue to follow the road, and then use the right lane to merge onto NS-125 W via the slip road to North Sydney/Newfoundland Ferry. You can then drive to the Main Street to your destination. The usual time of arrival can be 25 to 30 minutes, if traffic would remain light, which can make it convenient to go to this area.

Bras D'or
The highlands meet the lowlands along the shores of Bras D'or Lake, where you will usually find eagles nesting and puffins playing. This body of water is also pleasing to see, which is so large at 1,099 square kilometres that it seems to cut Cape Breton Island in two.

When going to this part of Cape Breton Island, you should get on NS-123 W in Sydney River from NS-4 W. Follow NS-125 W to Trans-Canada Highway/NS-105 W. Take exit 1W from NS-125 W, and then venture to Bras D'Or Florence Road/NS-305 S. The trip can take within 25 minutes, which makes it feasible if you want to go on a day trip.

Famous for its historic fortress, the town features plenty of attractions with its fishing docks and a friendly vibe in the town. The massive Atlantic coastline also serves as a major attraction.

From Sydney, you will have to go from Falmouth Street and turn left at the 2nd cross street onto Townsend Street. Turn right at the 2nd cross street onto George Street/Nova Scotia Trunk 22 S. At the roundabout, take the 1st entry exit and stay on George Street/Nova Scotia Trunk 22 S, and then turn right onto Kent Street. The trip can last about 30 minutes or so, if the weather is friendly enough for going along to the area. The driving conditions here are usually safe and easy, which can be delightful for those who are tired of heavy traffic.
