Tenerife is served by highways, the most important of which are the Autopista del Sur and the Autopista del Norte, or the South and North Motorways. These run south and north from the metropolitan zone and are connected by the Autovía de Interconexión Norte-Sur. Tenerife is also served by minor roads.
Here are a few basic rules to keep in mind when driving: roundabouts go in a reverse clockwise direction; give way to pedestrians waiting at the zebra crossing; get over onto the right when turning onto a dual carriageway. Pay attention to arrows on the road; if it is pointing forward, then you have the right of way. If it is pointing backwards, you need to give way. Traffic runs on the right-hand side of the road.
