Driving around Ceduna Airport
Ceduna Airport is situated on route A1, also known as the Eyre Highway. This road travels west to Ceduna and then continues close to the coast through Penong and Yalata. In the opposite direction, the A1 travels south and east towards Wirrulla and Port Augusta. From the airport, it’s also easy to join the B100, a route which travels south along the coast to Smoky Bay and Port Kenny.
Cars drive on the left hand side of the road in Australia, as they do in the UK. Roads are generally in excellent condition but there are many dirt, gravel and unsealed roads in the outback. You need to be sure your car is equipped for these roads and check with your car hire company to make sure you insurance covers travel on these roads. Visitors can explore ancient Aboriginal burial sites, rock formations formed by volcanic eruptions and habitats belonging to some incredible wildlife. For more wildlife, Gawler Ranges Conservation Reserve is also close by.
Gawler Ranges National Park is around two hours’ drive from Ceduna Airport, taking route A1 south and then Minnipa-Yardea Road towards the park. It’s possible to leave your car at the park entrance but if you’re planning on using trails and tracks through the park, you’ll need a 4WD.
Streaky Bay is a coastal town on the Eyre Peninsula. Visitors can enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, some great fishing opportunities and charming streets filled with cafés, restaurants and boutiques. There’s excellent surfing close by, scenic hiking and cycling routes and great seafood too.
Streaky Bay is around an hour’s drive away from Ceduna Airport, taking route A1 south from the airport and then the B100. The small town is easy to navigate, with the bay always providing a useful reference point. Parking is also easy with both street parking and designated car parks available.
