Tamworth Airport

Tamworth, a delightful northern New South Wales township, has its flights serviced by the Tamworth Regional Airport (TMW). Once a training school for the Royal Australian Air Force in the 1940s, the airport of Tamworth was reopened as a commercial flying hub in the 1950s and today it sees around 150,000 people fly into its hub each year. Owned and operated by the Tamworth Regional Council, this airport is consistently upgrading in order to keep up with growing passenger demands. However, you’ll find that this airport is still home to large aviation training schools, dedicated to teaching new pilots on how to take to the air.

The airport is open 24 hours, and the modern terminal building has a kiosk where transiting guests can grab something to eat. However, you won’t find many facilities beyond the kiosk here, as this is still a small regional airport, and any currency or cash services you need are best sought in Tamworth town.

The airlines that operate in and out of Tamworth Airport include Virgin Australia, JETGO and Qantas, and these offer regular non-stop services to Sydney (SYD) and Brisbane (BNE), where you can connect to other destinations in Australia, or international ones across the world, including North and South America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and Oceania.

Travel Information

· Tamworth Airport is situated 10km west of the central business district of the town, and isn’t a far journey via car. Avis, Budget, Hertz and Thrifty are the companies that provide rental cars to incoming passengers, though please be aware that you can normally find a cheaper deal if you book in advance using our search tool. To get into Tamworth, head east on New Winton Road towards Basil Brown Drive, then turn right onto the Oxley Highway (B56), and continue on this road through three roundabouts, and then veer left, on that same road, across the Peel River, until you come to Peel Street where you will turn right, leading you right to the centre of town.

· You will have to take a taxi into town if you do not intend to drive, as there isn’t public transport servicing the Tamworth Airport. The drive should take less than 15 minutes if there isn’t much traffic, but expect the fare to come to about $27. Airports transfers can be booked online, and can often be cheaper than taxis, so they are worth investigating.
