 Kake Airport

A public-use seaplane base located in the first-class city of Kake, a city in the Wrangell – Petersburg Census Area of the US state of Alaska, the Kake Seaplane Base operates scheduled airline passenger service that is subsidised by the US Department of Transportation via the Essential Air Service program. Kake Seaplane Base airport is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems, which categorised it as a general aviation facility. It has one runway with a direction of NW/SE, and length of 10,000 feet or 3,048 metres made up of water surface. The airport is being served by the airline Air Excursions, which flies to Juneau.

Kake is located on the northwest coast of Kupreanof Island in the Alexander Archipelago in south-eastern Alaska. The city got its name from the Tlingit word Ḵéix̱' (Northern Tlingit) or Ḵéex̱' (Southern Tlingit), which means mouth of dawn or opening of daylight. The town has a total area of 14.2mi2 or 37km2, of which about 6mi2 or 16km is composed of water. Overall, the total area is made up of 42.37% water. As of 2010, its population only numbered to 710. Of these, there are about 246 households and at least 171 families.

Services and Facilities

Since Kake Seaplane Base operates solely on water surface, it has none of the services and facilities that can be likened to a normal airport. There has been no reported airframe repair, power plant repair, bottled oxygen, and bulk oxygen. In addition, it also has no wind indicator, segmented circle, and control tower. Despite lacking in the aforementioned features, it is however armed with an airport communication.

From Kake centre, you should head south on 3rd Street towards 2nd Ave, then take the first left onto 2nd Ave. Turn slight left onto Silver Spike Road, then continue heading onto Keku Road. Make a left turn and upon reaching a junction, make a left turn again. Continue heading straight until you reached Kake Airport.
