 Chicken Airport

The unusually named Chicken Airport (CKX) services the small town of Chicken in southeast Alaska. Whilst Alaska as a whole is known for its breathtaking beauty, this region of this large state is most famous for being part of the Gold Rush. In fact, the town of Chicken is considered to be the last surviving Gold Rush town in the area, and holds the distinction of having struck gold a few years before the Klondike Gold Rush in 1896.

Chicken sits on the Taylor Highway, which connects to the renowned Alaska Highway, and though this town at its height was once home to over 400 people, today you’ll find that the community has dwindled to about 50 people.

Chicken Airport is state owned, and has one runway. The only airline that services this tiny regional transport hub is 40-Mile Air, which flies to and from the nearby Tok Airport (TKJ). This is another very small facility, but from here you can connect to Fairbanks International Airport (FAI), which flies to destinations in-state but also to much larger cities, like Seattle, Washington.

The information provided above is accurate as of March 3, 2016.

Driving hide

There is a nearby U-Haul truck rental company in Tok. If you hire a car from here you can set out from Tok down the Taylor Highway to Chicken (the drive takes roughly an hour and a half).

There are many more car rental companies in Fairbanks, Alaska, and if you want to really see this part of the country, driving through to the Gold Rush town of Chicken is a great way to experience the Alaska of days gone by. If you drive from Fairbanks to Chicken, the journey will clock in at about six hours; two hours after you’ve passed Tok, you’ll see a sign pointing to the Chicken Community.

You must past the Post Office, which will be on your left, then head down the hill until you come to Chicken Creek Bridge, and take a right to find your way into this historical community.
