London Gatwick Airport (LGW) is one of six airports that service London, the historic capital of the United Kingdom. It is the second busiest airport in the country, and is now seeing upwards of 40 million people fly in and out of its terminals. Having been a commercial airport for over 80 years, this constantly modernising transit facility can offer you all the amenities you need when you’re jetting off somewhere exciting.
There are information desks staffed by multi-lingual employees, public telephones, free WiFi for up to 45 minutes, an internet café, postal services, currency exchange counters, a medical centre, playrooms, showers, and ATMs.
For shopaholics, you can tour the large duty-free area within the international terminals, dip into the fashion retailers, pick up gifts at the souvenir shops, or purchase last minute travel accessories and electronics. Then relax with a bite before you fly, or grab something when you land in one of the many restaurants, cafes and bars within the airport.
This is a long-haul flight if you are departing from Australia, and subject to one or two stopovers, so you won’t find any direct routes, but you can find flights with Cathay Pacific, Qantas and Emirates to this airport.
Travel Information
· There are plenty of car hire companies operating out of London Gatwick, but if you’d prefer not to deal with the hassle of booking a car when you arrive, why not reserve one ahead of time with Skyscanner’s car hire search tool? To drive into London, you just get on the M23 to the M25, and then hop onto the A3 towards London, and you will come right into the centre of town. Be advised, the drive can take you about an hour, depending on traffic.
· There are several rail services into the city, which vary in price and duration, with journeys costing between 9-20GBP ($14-32), and taking 30 to 50 minutes.
· There are lots of coach and bus services that leave from the airport, and these do tend to take 1-2 hours depending on the traffic. You can book a private airport transfer, which may suit you better, especially if you are travelling with children, or a lot of luggage.
· You can take a taxi, though this is an expensive option, as the airport is located 45km from the city centre. Expect a fare to come to at least 100GBP ($160) if you decide on this method of transport.
