Discover Jakarta

Jakarta is Indonesia's capital and largest city. It is located on the northwest coast of the island of Java. Jakarta is the country's cultural, economic, and political centre. It has an estimated population of 10.2 million people, making it a great megalopolis and the most populous city not only in the country but in the whole of Southeast Asia. The city itself is a historic mix of race and ethnicities, a melting pot of diverse cultures.

What to see & do

There are plenty of things to do and see in this big city, from museums to amusement parks to mosques and cathedrals and to its vibrant streets and nightlife. As the city's icon as well as a symbol of the country's former struggles, the National Monument of Monas is a great first stop. The National History Museum and the National Gallery are also in the area. Head to Ancol Dreamland which is a 24-hour amusement park where adults and kids alike can have fun watching animal shows, visiting art markets, the beach, and do some wakeboarding. Visit Dufan or Dunia Fantasi amusement park if you still can't get enough with exhilarating rides. To witness a breathtaking meeting of two religions, visit the Istiqlal mosque, the largest mosque in Indonesia, and see the Cathedral located just across the road. Both structures have a beautiful and charming architecture and are proof of the diversity and harmony that the city's culture possesses. Stroll along Jalan Surabaya if you fancy antique stuff. Visit the Old Town or the Old Batvia with several interesting museums to visit such as the Jakarta History Museum (Fatahillah Museum), Museum of Fine Art and Ceramic, as well as the Puppet Museum. There are plenty of other museums – the Jakarta Arts theatre, the Jakarta Textile museum, Proclamation Museum, Maritime Museum, and the Kite Museum. To have a glimpse of the culture in the whole of Indonesia, visit Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, a place that is practically a miniature of Indonesia.
