Stayed at a B&B here and it was a beautiful location. Hyacinth fields blooming, sheep, goats, Dutch country at its best. Felt very safe and the people were very friendly.

ALKMAAR “BIJ ALKMAAR BEGINT DE VICTORIE” – “VICTORY BEGINGS AT ALKMAAR”. In 1537 the city underwent a siege by Spanish forces under the leadership of Don Fadrique. The citizens ask the Prince of Orange for help; he responded by promising to open the floodgates of the dykes. With the water beginning to rise, the Spaniards raised the siege and fled. It was a turning point in the eighty years’ war and give rise to the expression “Victory begins at Alkmaar”. The event is still celebrated in Alkmaar on 8 October, the day the siege ended. Alkmaar has many medieval buildings, the Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk, The Waagplein with the Waag, Townhall tower, the Kapelkerk, the Sint-jacobskerk, The Mient, The Laat, the Kooltuin, the Zijdam, the Canals, Windmill van Piet and the Canada square. Museums: The Beatles museum, the Boom Beer museum, Chees Museum, City Alkmaar history museum. Alkmaar is also great for shopping.

Alkmaar is one of the best looking Cities in North of the Netherlands and international well known for it's old Cheese Market (from April to September on every friday). Also some beautiful "Grachten" can be seen there. Near the Cheese Market is a strongly recommanded tourist boot station for an one hour round trip (passing 26 bridges). The Old town is really beautiful with nice buildings and many Shops, bars and Museums.

City in the Netherlands well known for its cheese market, one of only four traditional Dutch cheese markets still in existence. At the cheese market, colorfully dressed locals run around with huge wheels of cheese on trays that are carried with straps around the shoulders of two people in the square in front of the medieval weighing house. Kinda touristy, but fun to watch, this really just a demonstration of how this merchants' market operated in times gone by. Fun day trip from Amsterdam, and while you can't buy the cheese being run around, there are plenty of stands nearby where you can buy and eat the pretty tasty stuff.
