Interesting Arab village in northern Israel with a vibrant Christian past. The Christian sites are often frequented by pilgrims but the rest of the city is worth exploring as well.
An Arab-majority town, Nazareth packs a lot into its five square miles. Expect houses pressed up against mosques squashed in next to churches. The Church of the Annunciation, believed to stand on the site where the Angel Gabriel visited Mary, Mother of Jesus, is the major draw for many visitors. While the main drag gets very busy, quieter, winding streets lie just behind and are home to some interesting restaurants and shops.
The city is busy and feels so alive! The church is the main attraction, but there is a charming market and fun restaurants as well.
The largest Arab city in Israel and, according to the New Testament, the childhood home of Jesus. Top tourist site is the Church of the Annunciation, the largest Christian church of anywhere in the Middle East, and where according to Roman Catholic doctrine the angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she had conceived Jesus. One of the major centres of Christian pilgrimage after Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
