Fantastic local

Went for a midweek drink and a meal and was so impressed by the relaxed and friendly service and atmosphere. The food was wholesome, not quite 5 star, but the location and evening definitely are. Loved the fact that there are different sections, traditional sit down, casual dining and sports bar, all separate.

Good, basic, adequate.

This is our 5th time back to the Commonwealth, but just found it this time pretty average, staff okay - the friendliest staff member was the cleaner, lovely person. The rooms and bathroom definitely need a paint but for the price of $119 for room without bathroom or $140 with bathroom good for Newcastle (no hairdryer). It is sometimes the small things in hospitality that make all the difference, no care factor I felt here. Comparing to a place we just stopped at in Albury, friendly staff, even a free but fab breakfast, of coffee and toast, awesome. I shd mention though the food at the Commonwealth is lovely, staff good, lunch and dinner available. So by all means stay at the Commonwealth as good for a night, just basic.

Appalling food

Doughy undercooked lamb cutlets, cold mash, tasteless veggies that could have done with seasoning and butter, gravy like glue. An appalling excuse for a good pub classic, virtually inedible.
Time before the worst bruschetta I’ve ever tasted, stale bread croutes, no sign of olive oil, garlic, Parmesan or basil to be seen. Inedible. Get a new head chef, for a busy pub this is inexcusably embarrassingly bad food.

Good Pub Grub, Good Price

This is a typical Newcastle pub.
Great beer garden
Meals were good and service time was fine.
Meal size was good and cooked as requested.
Order at the bar, then table service to deliver the meal.
Seating can be a bit hard to come by and we ended up in the tab area.
It was a popular location for a meal on a Friday, booking may be needed if you have something special on.
Well worth a visit

Commonwealth beauty

Classic Australian pub in inner city Newcastle (Cooks Hill). Built in 1882, with nostalgic features - including pressed tin ceilings, and historic advertising. Beer garden is beautiful, with a garden ceiling of various ferns and plants. Enjoyable dinner here earlier in the week. My steak, with peppercorn sauce, was great; other meals ordered were reasonable too. Good variety of beers on tap.
