Wroclaw Airport (WRO)

Located only 10km out of the downtown Wroclaw, the Wroclaw Nicolaus Copernicus Airport (WRO) has grown since its grass roots as an air field for the German military in the 30s, and has the capacity to service roughly 4 million passengers a year. It comes complete with ATMs, currency exchange services, travel agencies, and assortment of shops and restaurants, and a post office.

Airlines to Wroclaw

There are a decent number of international airline carriers to this airport, and these include Eurolot, Germanwings, Polish Airlines LOT, Qantas, Lufthansa, SAS Scandinavian Airlines, Wizz Air and Ryanair.

If you’re flying from Australasia you’ll find that you will be subject to at least one or two stopovers, usually in Singapore (SIN), Bangkok (BKK) and European hubs like Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC).

Getting into Wroclaw

By taxi

You can find taxis just outside the airport, and though this may be the most direct way to travel into the city centre, the speed depends entirely on the traffic. Expect a journey to downtown Wroclaw to cost between 45-55PLN ($16-19.50)

By public transport

There is a public bus route, the 406 that travels between the airport and the Central Railway/Bus Station every 20 minutes, and takes about half an hour travel time. At night, this switches to the 249, which only runs three services in the evening. For more information on timetables, visit the city transport website.

By car

Many visitors choose to hire a car to travel around the country, and the airport is well facilitated for such needs, with nine different car rental counters located within the arrivals hall of the airport. What can you do in Wroclaw?

As the largest settlement in western Poland, this city has had a fractious and fascinating past, having been known under many different names, and held under many different kingdoms over the one thousand years it has existed.

Its architecture, both old and new is testament to its history and changing cultures. The best place to start is probably in the Old Town and in Wroclaw’s Market Square, the heart of the city, where colourful, beautifully restored buildings surround this busy, vibrant square. Radiating out from this space are narrow cobbled streets that lead to canals, churches and hidden chapels. In this part of town you will find most of the city’s museums and important monuments, as well as small boutiques and cool cafes.

From Old Town, you must head to Ostrów Tumski, the ‘Cathedral Island’ which you can get to by crossing the Tumski bridge, and where you can see the ethereally beautiful Wroclaw Cathedral and the earthy St. Giles church.

Out of the Old Town to the east of the city, you can see the UNESCO listed Centennial Hall, designed by Max Berg in the early 20^th century, this is considered to be an important piece of modernist architecture.

For a little of the outdoors, take the time to see the beautiful Botanic Gardens of this dynamic and fascinating city.

When should you go?

Though Wroclaw is one of Poland’s warmer cities, it never really gets that hot. The summer months (June-August) are usually the best time to visit Wroclaw, when the weather is at its warmest, though the average only tends to be around 19-20°C. The winter (December-January) is frigid and averages around 0°C, so if you don’t like the cold, it is best avoided.

What do you need to know?

Currency: The Polish Zloty (PLN)

Visas: Most international travellers are granted at least a 90 day stay in Poland without a visa. However, it is important to check if you are eligible for this waiver, otherwise you may not be able to board your flight. The government’s official immigration website has a helpful page which lists countries that do not need a visa to enter Poland, please check this before you travel.
