The beautiful city of Venice is served by the international Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE), and if you are flying from Australia you are mostly likely going to be directed to this hub. There are ATMs, foreign exchange services, duty-free shopping, bars, restaurants, cafes, WiFi access, and information desks that you can access.

The airport is on the mainland and about 12km from the floating city of Venice, but there are lots of connections via road, rail and water. Private water taxis are expensive, but the smaller ferries are less so, with approximate prices around 15EUR ($22).

Things to do in Venice

The main part of Venice is quite small, spread over a series of islands and connected by bridges, and traversed by gondola. The city is warren-like in the way its narrow streets twist and turn, and each long and winding pathway shelters traditional trattorias, Italian boutiques, enclosed squares, swaying laundry, and Venetian residents.

Wander along the Grande Canal for a look at the Ponte di Rialto the most beautiful bridge in the city, and will take you directly into the busy part of town. Here, you will find markets, bakeries, and lots of restaurants huddling along the water. Order a spritz and watch the boats sail by.

Then prepare for a day of historical investigation by heading to San Marco, where you can see the incredible golden-tiled San Marco Basilica. In this same square you will find the Museo Correr, which houses a fantastic collection of Caravaggio, Raphael and Titian paintings. Then tour the lavish Doge’s Palace, an extraordinary building where the duke of the republic would preside over his courtiers and his subjects. The palace is also connected to a prison by the Bridge of Sighs, where the condemned were sent from the royal court to their cell.

When you depart this museum, you can walk along the waterfront, and if you like, take a boat out to Murano, the small island where the glass masters of Italy have been working their craft for centuries.

Best time to visit Venice

·         The autumn months, September and October, are usually the best time to go to this city, because the crowds are far lower, and the weather is still warm. Expect highs of     18-23°C and lows of 10-14°C.

·         Summers are usually very busy and very hot. However, if you’re looking for a little beach time on Lido, or want to spend some time on the water, this is a good time to come. Highs sit at about 25-28°C.

Arriving in Venice

·         Venice is one of the busiest destinations in Europe, and you can find connecting flights out of most major Australian cities. However, you will be subject to a stop or two, usually through Dubai (DXB) or Doha (DOH).
