The Republic of Nauru, formerly known as Pleasant Island but commonly referred to as simply Nauru, is an island country in Micronesia in the Central Pacific. With a total area of 21 square kilometres, it is the smallest independent republic in the world. The de facto capital is the district of Yaren.
What to see & do
Anibare Bay - Anibare Bay is a large bay situated in the Anibare District, in the eastern part of the island. The bay is bordered by capes to the north and south and formed by the underwater collapse of the east side of the volcano underlying Nauru. Anibare Bay is a good place to take a leisurely stroll or to swim during high tide.
Buada Lagoon - Buada Lagoon is a landlocked (endorheic) freshwater lake east of Aiwo District. Its size is about 0.13 square kilometres, with an average depth of 78 feet (24 m). The maximum depth is 256 feet (78 m). The lagoon is surrounded by dense palm trees and various other kinds of vegetation. As the only body of water on the island, it is quite a picturesque area. However, the water is not clean and not suitable for swimming in.
Comman Ridge - Command Ridge, Janor in Nauruan, is the highest point of Nauru. It has an elevation of 213 ft (65 m).
Australian Rules Football - The local teams have football matches during Saturdays at the Linkbelt Oval Sports field.
Moqua Well - Moqua Well is a small underground lake in Yaren. It was the primary source of drinking water for the locals in Nauru during the World War II, hence the identification of 'Well' instead of 'Lake'. Near it is the Moqua Caves, a series of underground caves found also underneath Yaren.
War relics in Yaren - Als in Yaren, there are leftover war relics from World War II, such as Japanese guns, bunkers, and pillboxes.
Nauru cuisine - Since Nauru is an island nation, seafood dishes are commonly served in Nauru. The main foods served in Nauru are sashimi, coconut fish, meat, and cooked and smoked hams. The cuisine in Nauru is also highly influenced by those of Germany, China, Australia, and Britain.
Anibore Harbour - Most of the beaches in Nauru are far too shallow and rocky. The best bet to go for a swim in Nauru is in Anibore Harbour.
How to get around
The island is so small, with a 19-kilometre Island Ring Road encircling it, that it takes less than an hour to cover the island by car. Cars and bicycles can sometimes be rented from the largest local supermarket, Capelle and Partners. There is also a community bus that travels around the island on no specific schedule, but travels every hour or so during the day.
How to get there
The only international gateway and sole airport in Nauru is the Nauru International Airport. The country's national airline, Nauru Airlines, operates between Nauru International Airport and Brisbane Airport in Australia, Marshall Islands International Airport in the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Nadi International Airport in the Republic of Fiji, and Bonriki International Airport in the Republic of Kiribati.
