Honiara International Airport is a shared military and civilian facility located at the Guadalcanal Island in the Solomon Islands. Formerly known as Henderson Field, it is the only international airport in the island group, located eight kilometres from the capital city of Honiara.

Honiara international Airport first operated as an airfield, initially built by the Imperial Japanese Navy and then captured by the American forces, who went on to complete it. It was then named and inaugurated as Henderson Field, named after Major Lofton Henderson who was the commanding officer of VMSB-241 troupe and was killed during the Battle of Midway while leading his squadron into action against the Japanese forces, thereby being the first Marine aviator to perish during the battle. After the war, the airfield was abandoned, but was revived and reopened as a modernised civilian airport in 1969. It now serves as the only international gateway to the Solomon Islands, and is capable of accommodating aircraft as big as the Boeing 737. The airport stands at an elevation of 28 feet above mean sea level, and has an asphalt runway that measures 7,218 feet long. Services for the airport include passenger services, along with cargo and freight services. The airport is one of the 40 airports built in the Solomon Islands, and only one of 24 that has scheduled services.

Honiara is the capital city of Solomon Islands, administered as a provincial capital on the north-western coast of the Guadalcanal Island. It is the biggest city in the area, and although a little shabby and pretty much not the conventional all bravado capital, Honiara may still present a little of everything to a wandering traveller such as yourself. Honiara is home to several battlefields during the Second World War, and has an atmospheric market where tasty and fresh foods can be bought. It is also a gateway to scuba diving and the few nightlife destinations in the group of islands, along with several botanical gardens that is home to several Pacific plants. On the eastern part of the mouth of the Mataniko River is a beach where the wrecks of Japanese ship can be seen. Popular and important attractions in the city also include the Guadal Canal American Memorial, the Solomons Peace Memorial Park, the National Parliament house with beautiful frescoes and traditional artwork, the National Museum, the Botanical Gardens of the National Art Gallery, the Anthropology Museum, and a number of hotels and restaurants.

How to get around within Honiara

Mostly, locals and travellers get around the islands and the area of Honiara by boat, primarily because of the layout of the country. In the mainland, only few public transport modes go around, and usually, travellers rely on their hotel accommodations to get to another area. Taxis and minibuses also provide service between Honiara.
