An international port of entry serving the city of Bologna, Guglielmo Marconi Airport lies about six kilometres away from the centre, about 200 kilometres from Milan. It is one of the busiest airports in Italy, handling approximately five million passengers every year. Various airports in different European countries venture to and from this part of Italy, making it an important transit point in the region.

With a runway extending up to the 9,196 ft, the airport opens to a terminal, which was expanded from2011 to 2013. Various areas in the airport were improved, from the baggage handling system to the security checkpoints and more concessionaires. The facilities relatively make it easier to handle all the arrangements necessary before checking out of the airport and going to one of the most famous cities in Italy.

What to see & do

The region of Emilia-Romagna features a number of beautiful places, but the arguably most loved city here is Bologna. Other than its good food comprised of pasta and sausages, one will find various attractions in the city, such as architectural quirks and interesting brickwork. Its elegant old shops, cafes, and the active atmosphere of the students coming and going to one of the oldest universities in Europe can be experienced here.

The first landmarks to check out here are the Piazza Maggiore and the Piazza del Nettuno. The later features the magnificent Neptune Fountain, which was created by Giambologna in the 16th century. This makes an excellent meeting point, as the squares are near to the most important streets such as the shopping centre of Via dell'Indipendenza and the elegant aristocratic mansions in the Via Galleria. From here, you can venture to Via dell'Archiginnasio, alongside the great Basilica of San Petronius with a roughly-hewn façade. It dominates one side of the Plazza Maggiore. Designed to be bigger than St Peter's in Rome, the basilica never quite made it, as it remains unfinished to this day. The interiors, though, are quite pleasant and often referred to as the epitome of Gothic architecture in the country.

The Leaning Towers of Bologna are also fascinating to see. They date back from the 12th century, with even narrower shape than Pisa that makes them seem to tilt even more alarmingly. Their height might be intimidating, but it can be a delightful exertion to climb them, especially Torre degli Asinelli, which offers bird's eye views of Bologna. From here, one can venture to the Museo Civico Archeologico, which features a number of prehistoric and Etruscan finds from the surrounding area. There are also treasures from the Celtic, Greek, Egyptian, and Roman civilisations. Those who love art can then visit the Oratory of Battuti, where one can climb to the room above the church and look at Baroque paintings, frescoes, and gilded carvings. There are also terracotta statues here, such as the Death of the Virgin, which was created by Alfonso Lombardi in the early 16th century. The best museum of art here, though, is the Pinacoteca Nazionale, which features the works of artists who have lived and worked in Bologna from the 13th to the early 19th centuries.

How to get around within Bologna

Bologna has an efficient bus system with information booths at the main train station. Buses 25 and 30 are among the several that let passengers connect from the train station to the centre of the city. Those who prefer who go around by car will find much of the city centre off limits to vehicles. One can enter the Zona a Traffico Limitato, if the hotel can provide a ticket giving permission to do so. It is possible, however, to go around by bicycle as there are companies offering bicycle rental services.
