Discover Bermuda
Bermuda, referred to in legal documents as the Bermudas or Somers Isles, is a self-governing British Overseas Territory located in the North Atlantic Ocean. It covers a total area of 53.3 square kilometres and lies just off the east coast of North America, with the nearest landmass being Cape Hatteras, United States (approximately 1,030 kilometres west-northwest). The island is divided into nine parishes: St. George's Parish, Hamilton Parish, Smith's Parish, Devonshire Parish, Pembroke Parish, Paget Parish, Warwick Parish, Southampton Parish, and Sandys Parish. The capital and only city is Hamilton.
What to see & do
Crystal and Fantasy Caves - Bermuda may be known for its beaches and beautiful sunsets, but among the top tourist attractions on, rather under, the island is the Crystal and Fantasy Caves. The Crystal Cave is a famous subterranean cavern located in Hamilton Parish, near Castle Harbour. It is approximately 500 metres long and 62 metres deep and is absolutely stunning, with many stalagmites, stalactites, and crystal clear pools. The neighbouring Fantasy Cave is deeper, 88 steps down, with its walls covered entirely in calcite mineral deposits that look like frozen waterfalls. There is artificial lighting so visitors can have a better look around.
Bermuda Maritime Museum - Bermuda Maritime Museum, abbreviated BMM, is the largest museum in the country. It is dedicated to the history of Bermuda, with exhibitions on Bermuda's Defense Heritage, a two-storey History of Bermuda mural by the Bermudian artist Graham Foster, History of the Bermuda Race, and collections of maps, coins, books, and maritime art. Bermuda Maritime Museum has also published several books regarding Bermuda's history.
Devil's Hole Complex - Devil's Hole was the first and oldest tourist attraction in Bermuda. It was a large water-filled sinkhole near the south-eastern corner of Harrington Sound. The area has been developed into a multi-functional complex, with the main attraction being the natural tropical aquarium of the Devil's Hole. Visitors can attempt to "fish without a hook" in the Devil's Hole Aquarium, which contains species of reef fish.
How to get around within Bermuda
Car rentals are banned from Bermuda and only residents are allowed to own cars; but there really is no need for a private vehicle. Bus service on the island is excellent; the buses are air conditioned, service is frequent, and can take passengers to nearly all destinations on the island. The bus stops are marked by pink and blue painted poles: blue is for buses heading out from Hamilton and pink is for buses heading into Hamilton. Taxis are also an easy way to travel, with all licensed taxis fitted with meters for fair fares. Travellers who still wish for a more independent mode of transportation, motorised bicycles or mopeds can be rented at reasonable rates.
