Flights from El Obeid

Travelling to the middle of Sudan via El Obeid Airport lets one arrive in Al Ubayyid, the capital of the state of North Kurdufan. Travellers looking for this port of entry on the map will find it between 13.159722 (latitude) and 30.234167 (longitude). It also has an elevation point of 1,927 feet above sea level with a runway extending up to 9,843 feet long. Only one airline transports passengers coming between here and the capital, which makes it easy for the airport to accommodate departing and arriving flights.

Al Ubayyid is an important transportation hub, as it is the last station of the rail line and the junction of roads and caravan routes. Repair of the pavements have occurred years before, which has lessened the travel time between the major routes. This has made transportation relatively easier for the populace who used to travel from Al Ubayyid for more than 10 hours when undertaking a 500-kilometre journey.

Where to go

Contrary to what travellers may believe about Sudanese capital Khartoum, this city is no backward laggard to modernity. Skyscrapers dominate the business district with various traditional structures on the more populated parts of the city. This makes it an excellent travel point for travellers who want to explore the thriving capital of this country in North Africa.

One will see here the National Museum with its fascinating exhibits about the history of Sudan. Medieval Christian frescoes can also be viewed here, as well as old artefacts dating back to more than 3,000 years ago. Another landmark to visit here is Mahdi's Tomb, a traditional mausoleum with a rather strange-looking dome that appears to be the tip of a rocket. From here, one can venture to Omdurman Souq, the largest marketplace in the country, where one can look for souvenirs to commemorate the trip.

One more city to visit is Atbara, which makes a useful transport hub to the pyramids of Begrawiya. Those going here will find royal burial grounds with close to 200 small pyramids. However, some of the pyramids were smashed due to the philandering of explorers and adventurers such as Italian Giuseppe Ferlini who destroyed the tops of some 40 pyramids to look for treasures.

United Arab Emirates is a short-haul destination to add to the itinerary due to the vibrant and cosmopolitan city of Dubai. Futuristic skyscrapers vie with the traditional souqs which allow travellers to enjoy a variety of sights. Those exploring the city should not miss Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, which has more than 100 levels. Going up to the 124th level is a rewarding experience as one can see a magnificent panorama of the city on its observation deck.

After that, one can venture to Dubai Mall, which seems like a small glittering city of shops and restaurants. Those looking for a quiet atmosphere can turn to the Bastakiya Quarter with its wind-tower architecture and other marvellous cultural sites.

About ten hours of trip from Khartoum is Paris, the grand capital of France. Those going here will find various beautiful landmarks dotted throughout the city, starting from the Louvre Museum to the Versailles Palace. The Eiffel Tower also makes quite a sight especially on a cloudless sunny afternoon. Those going up this steel edifice are in for a visual treat, which lets one take in the cultured beauty of one of Europe's magnificent cities.
