Bentota River Airport, or Bentota River Seaplane Base, is the airport that serves the town of Bentota in Sri Lanka. This small airport can be located on the map with the coordinates 6°25′N 79°59′E (6.416667 latitude; 79.983333 longitude).

Bentota is a coastal town in the Galle District, Southern Province in Sri Lanka. The community lies around 65 kilometres or 40 miles south of Colombo, and 56 kilometres or 35 miles north of Galle. Bentota is situated on the southern bank of the mouth Bentota River. It is a popular tourist destination, equipped with accommodations such as world-class hotels. The town is known for offering great watersports opportunities; for its ancient art of healing, called Ayurveda; and for the production of toddy, an alcoholic beverage made from coconut nectar. Bentota is also home to a turtle hatchery on Induruwa beach.

Where to go

From Bentota River Seaplabe Base, travellers can fly directly to Colombo, Sri Lanka’s commercial capital and largest city. Wonderful tourist attractions in Colombo include the National Museum of Colombo, Viharamahadevi Park, Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple, National Zoological Gardens of Sri Lanka, Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, Galle Face Green, and Colombo Dutch Museum. Close to the National Museum of Sri Lanka, Viharamahadevi Park, formerly known as Victoria Park, is the oldest and largest of all the parks within the Port of Colombo. The park was named after Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugamunu and was built on a land that was donated to the Colombo city during the British rule of Sri Lanka. The park has been restored after being occupied by the British Army with Australia 17th Brigade during the WWII, then opened to the public in early 1950s.

Bentota River Seaplane Base only operates local flights to Colombo via Bandaranaike International Airport. From here, short haul destinations can be reached, such as Chennai, India; Muscat, Oman; and Hong Kong. Tourists visiting Chennai, India must not miss these popular attractions: Kapaleeshwarar Temple, Marina Beach, Arignar Anna Zoological Park, St. Thomas Mount, Parthasarathy Temple Triplicane, Marundeeswarar Temple, and more. Kapaleeshwarar Temple is a Shiva temple within Mylapore Chennai. Built in the seventh century CE in Dravidian architecture, the temple houses many shrines and halls and has six daily rituals at various times from morning till evening. It is said that Shiva’s wife Parvati is worshipped at this temple, referred to as Karpagambal or ‘Goddess of the Wish-Yielding Tree’.

Bentota River Seaplane Base does not operate international flights. From Colombo, long haul stops include Vienna, Austria; Moscow, Russia; and Istanbul, Turkey. In Vienna, St. Stephen's Cathedral Vienna, Tiergarten Schönbrunn, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Hofburg Palace, Museumsquartier, Rathaus Vienna, Vienna State Opera, Naturhistorisches Museum, and Leopold Museum are some of the amazing sites to be seen. Naturhistorisches Museum or NHMW occupies an area of approximately 8,700 square metres or 94,000 square feet, and houses collections from over 250 years ago. Some of the museum’s most important exhibits include the 25,000 year-old Venus of Willendorf, a statuette of a female figure; a replica of the skeleton of a Diplodocus dinosaur; and specimens of various long-extinct lifeforms, including the Steller’s sea cow, to name a few.
