Getting to your destination

Kaunas

Rich history, lively culture, and a buzzing arts scene make Kaunas a fantastic city to visit: but no one's told the tourists yet. It's one of our favourite European secret cities. Go before everyone else discovers it.

It takes just over 20 minutes to drive to the centre of Kaunas from the airport. On-street parking is widely available and fairly cheap. There are no underground car parks in the city centre, although the huge multi-storey car park at the Akropolis shopping mall is a 20 minute walk from the old town.

Vilnius

Home to Europe's largest baroque old town, Lithuania's capital is an absolute beauty popular with both culture vultures and rowdy revellers. Check out our top 9 things to do in Vilnius for a bit of inspiration.

If you can't find cheap flights to Vilnius, you can always fly to Kaunas and drive the rest of the way. It only takes an hour and ten minutes to drive to downtown Vilnius from Kaunas Airport: not bad at all! There are four car parking price bands in Vilnius. On-street parking is chargeable from 8am to 8pm. In the cheapest zone (green) one hour costs 30 cents (about 20p) and in the most expensive (blue) parking costs €1.80 (just under £1.30) per hour.

Daugai

During the summer this lake-side city becomes a popular tourist resort. There's no public transport, so if you're planning on basing yourself in Daugai a hire car is essential.

It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes to drive to Daugai from Kaunas International Airport. Daugai is quite rural, so there are loads of places to park. Most hotels, B&Bs and other accommodation options have guest car parking.
