Mannheim Airport

Mannheim City Airport or City-Airport Mannheim (in German), is a minor regional airport in Mannheim, Germany. The airport is primarily used for general aviation and is operated by Rhein-Neckar Flugplatz GmbH. It resides at an elevation of 309 feet / 94 metres above mean sea level and has two runways in use; the main runway is designated 09/27, paved with asphalt, and is 3,497 feet (1,066 metres) long, and a parallel grass runway at the length of 2,297 feet (700 metres). The latter is used only for glide and ballooning. Mannheim City Airport is located in the district of Neuostheim, 3.5 kilometres east of the city centre. It is surrounded by highways to the east and the south, a power transmission line to the east, and a few high-rise buildings to the west. Due to its surrounding area, Mannheim City Airport lacks space for expansion.

Mannheim City Airport currently has a sand-lime brick designed terminal building. It was built in 1998 by architect Prof. Peter Serini. The terminal has a ticketing office, two check-in counters, a security passenger checkpoint, a waiting area, and a baggage claim area, along with airline offices, a snack bar, a police station, and a flying school. Near the current terminal are parts of the old terminal building, including the old tower, which is now used as a restaurant. Beside the former terminal is a fitness club that opened in 2000.

Services and Facilities

Rhein-Neckar Air, operated by MHS Aviation, offers commercial flights from Mannheim City Airport to Berlin Tegel Airport and Hamburg Airport. The reason for the limited scheduled operations is that Mannheim is very well-connected to several international airports. The closest is Frankfurt Airport, which can be reached in less than 30 minutes by train. Other nearby airports with many international connections include Frankfurt Hahn Airport, Stuttgart Airport, Strasbourg Airport, Baden Airpark, Zweibrücken Airport, and Saarbrücken Airport, all of which can be reached less than 90 minutes by train or car.

Mannheim City Airport is therefore used mainly for general aviation. Business airlines that regularly serve the airport are EAS Executive AirService, ATB Flugdienst, and Business Wings. Some of the aircraft based at the airport are the corporate jets of several companies, including Roche Diagnostics, Heidelberger DRuckmaschinen, SAP AG, and Bilfinger. Airlines that previously served Mannheim on a scheduled basis include Cirrus Airlines (to Berlin-Tegel, Berlin-Tempelhof, Dresden, Hamburg, Munich, Kiel, Olbia, Saarbrücken, and Sylt), Cosmos Air (to Berlin-Tempelhof and London-City), and Arcus-Air Logistic (to Oberpfaffenhofen, Leipzig/Halle, Dresden, Bern, Prague, and Hamburg).

Ground transportation connecting Mannheim City Airport to the city centre includes tram lines 5 and 6. There is a secured, partly free carpark available for those with private vehicles.

There are reportedly ongoing discussions regarding shutting down Mannheim City Airport in the future and that proposals are being considered, such as using the site instead for the 2023 Bundesgartenschau (Germany's biennial Federal horticulture show).
