Chennai International Airport, Chennai, India

Chennai International Airport is India's fourth busiest airport, after New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore. With passenger numbers increasing, the airport is predicted to reach maximum capacity in the next few years, although a proposed second airport at Sriperumbudur has not advanced beyond the planning stage.

This sprawling airport covers an area of 519 hectares, with different sections located in different suburban areas. The international and domestic terminals in Tirusulam are connected via a link building and complimentary coach services. The older terminal in Meenambakkam is now only used for cargo.

Chennai Airport is the major hub for four airlines – Air Carnival, Air Costa, Blue Dart Aviation and Jet Airways – which join Air India, GoAir, IndiGo, SpiceJet and TruJet in the Kamaraj domestic terminal. All other airlines use the Anna international terminal, including British Airways, Etihad Airways and Emirates.

Both terminal include a full range of facilities to take care of travellers, whether you want to take out cash and exchange money, do some duty-free shopping or enjoy your favourite Indian and international dishes at the many restaurants and cafes.

Chennai Airport also has an executive lounge and communication centre where business travellers can stay connected. Wi-Fi internet is available throughout the airport, but the free service is limited to 30 minutes.

Driving hide

Parking is available at the airport. Cars may be rented from companies such as Hertz and Avis at the arrival hall of each terminal.

Trains hide

The Tirusulam suburban railway network also connects to the airport at the metro station. This is a cheaper option than the metro, with the journey to Park Station in the city centre costing around Rs 10 for standard class or Rs 100 for first class.

It can be worth paying for the upgrade, especially if you're travelling during peak times, as the trains get very crowded and are not air-conditioned. Passengers are advised to watch their belongings.

Buses hide

Walk outside the airport gate to find the public bus station and catch bus 18A or 18B to Central Chennai. Buses depart frequently between 5am and 10pm and take around 45 minutes. The 18A bus costs Rs 20 and the air-conditioned 18B is Rs 40.

Taxi hide

If you prefer to travel by taxi, you should purchase a coupon at one of the taxi counters in the arrivals area before heading to the taxi rank. Taxi fares are pre-paid and should be around Rs 500 going to hotels in the city centre. Depending on traffic conditions, the journey usually takes about 40 minutes.

You can also catch auto-rickshaws outside Chennai Airport, but as fun as the ride can be, it's not really economical or comfortable for travelling into the city. Save the experience for shorter hops around town.
