Dhaka Airport

The Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC), previously known as the Zia International Airport, is the primary aviation facility in Bangladesh, and the key international airport for the nation. Situated in Dhaka, the thriving and energetic capital of Bangladesh, this airport was established in 1980, and sees around 6 million passengers transit through its terminal buildings each year. The airport connects the country to 19 other nations, and operates flights run by 26 airlines.

There are three terminals in this airport, two general commercial terminals, and a private one. In 2012 the airport underwent an upgrade, but you will not find many amenities here. However, as this airport is only 8km from the city proper, you can access ATMs, dining and shopping options, WiFi, and banking access once you get to Dhaka. Within the airport itself, you will find currency exchange services, and information points that you can utilise.

Fly from the cities of Australia to Dhaka with Singapore Airlines, Thai Airways, Malaysia Airlines, Dragonair, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, China Southern, and Bangkok Airways, all of which offer codeshare or connecting routes to Bangladesh.

Travel Information

·         With the airport only 8km away, the drive into town is pretty straightforward. Just take the DOHS Bypass to the Tongi Diversion Roas, and then follow that to the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway. This road will take you right into town, and should take about 20 minutes. You can hire cars in Bangladesh, and Europcar has a dedicated rental desk within the terminal, but a rental vehicle will almost certainly come with a driver, and generally it is advised that you use this service as driving in Bangladesh can be a little overwhelming. The easiest way to organise a rental is to arrange one online using our tailored car hire search tool, which can pinpoint the local agencies, and save you money.

·         Buses can take you from the airport into town for the cheap and cheerful price of about 20-25BDT (30-40 cents), but can take a little longer than via car or taxi. You can arrange an airport transfer if you’d prefer, which might be the better option if you are travelling in a group.

·         You’ll find taxis right outside the airport, and generally you will have to haggle for a price, especially if they refuse to turn on the meter. Aim for an approximate price of 200BDT ($3).
