Chengdu Airport

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU)

The Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) is the principal international hub for both the Sichuan region of China, and its premier city of Chengdu. With links out to 144 cities around Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Australasia, and Africa, this popular hub sees approximately 42 million visitors pass through its terminals.

Amenities within the airport are pretty good, but not extensive. You will find most of your basics are covered, such as being able to communicate with your family back home through the free WiFi. If it’s your first time in China, there are information desks that can give you tips, suggestions and advice on the city and the surrounding area.

You’ll find charging points to keep your mobile devices topped up, a few lounges that are great if you are transiting for a long time and need somewhere comfortable to spend your layover. There is also a comprehensive duty-free shop that sells popular cosmetics, tobacco, alcohol, and fragrances.

Lastly, you will be able to take out cash at one of the many ATMs, or change over the cash you already have at one of the foreign exchange counters. You can also access medical services if you aren’t feeling well upon arrival.

There aren’t any direct routes to Chengdu, but there are several connecting ones from Australia, and these are often with Dragonair, Xiamen Airlines, China Eastern, Silkair, China Southern, Sichuan Airlines, Air China, Cathay Pacific, and Hong Kong Airlines.

Travel Information

·         You need to pass a Chinese driving test to drive in China, or apply for a temporary Chinese license, so unless you are staying for an extended period of time, it is not advisable to drive. However, there is usually an option to hire a vehicle with a driver included, so the best way to go forward is to use our car hire search tool to review the choices available to you.

·         Chengdu Airport is connected to the city via a high-speed railway that only takes between 10 and 20 minutes to get into town depending on where you are getting off. There are buses available too, though finding the right route can be intimidating if you’ve never been to China before. One of the easiest ways around this is to organise an airport transfer, which can meet you when you arrive, and take you door-to-door.

·         Taking a taxi into town shouldn’t take you long, only 20 minutes, given that the distance is only around 16km, and the fare should come to around 50-80CNY ($10-15).
