Catania Fontanarossa Airport

Catania-Fontanarossa Airport, also called as Vincenzo Bellini Airport, is an international public airport located approximately 4.3 kilometers from the southwest of Catania, the second largest city on the Italian Island of Sicily. It is deemed as the busiest airport in Sicily and the sixth busiest in Italy, having had served more or less 6 million passengers in 2013. The airport serves as a focus city for Alitalia, Meridiana, Mistral Air, and Ryanair. In addition, major airlines such as Lufthansa and Air Berlin also offer services in the airport and connect a number of European destinations such as Rome, Munich, and Berlin, while low cost airlines easyJet and Ryanair offer extensive flights to a number of leisure destinations. The airport has one runway with an asphalt surface, tilting to the direction of 08/26 stretching about 2,436 meters or 7,989 feet.

The airport dates back to 1924, and became the region’s first airport. During the Sicilian Campaign in World War II, the Allies seized the airport and were used by the United States Army Air Forces as a military airfield. After the war, it was turned back to the civil authorities, who relocated the airport to its present location. In 1950, a bigger and improved Catania Airport finally commenced operations to better serve the influx of travellers to and fro the country. Catania-Fontanarossa Airport underwent its last restructuring in 1981.
