What can you do in Portland?

Having the distinction of being Victoria’s first permanent settlement, Portland has a long history by Australian colonialist standards. It was a major nautical port of call at one point because it sits between South Australia’s capital of Adelaide and Victoria’s capital of Melbourne, making it a perfect stopover between the two.

However, since its inception in 1834, Portland is now a place where visitors come to indulge their love of Colonial history, as the town boasts over 200 historical buildings made out of lovely bluestone. Portland also makes a wonderful base to explore the surrounding coastline and parks, such as hiking the Great South West Walk, or visiting The Cape Nelson State Park, Discovery Bay Coastal Park and the Lower Glenelg National Park.

If you’re curious about the history of this town, then learn about it in the Portland Maritime Discovery Centre. Or for a little fun, see the Powerhouse Car Museum, and then ride on the Portland Cable Trams for a little nostalgic turn about this region of Australia.

If you plan to go a little further afield, Portland makes a solid jumping off point to Port Fairy, a historic little fishing village, where you can start the fantastic Great Ocean Road tour, a car journey that lasts about 10 hours, with many towns and villages on the way, and sites that include the incredible 12 Apostles, and ends in Victoria’s premier city of Melbourne.

When should you go?

Portland is colder than you would expect of the sunny nation of Australia, so we suggest that the best time to visit the town is in the summer months from December to February, when the lows are around 12°C and the highs are a pleasant 21°C.
