Alghero-Fertilia Airport (AHO)

Alghero-Fertilia Airport is one of the main airports that service Sardinia, and the primary one for the northwestern regions of the island.  This is a very well facilitated airport and passengers will find access to ATMs, a currency exchange service, an information desk, ticket kiosks, as well as a variety of dining and shopping options to explore upon exit.

Airlines to Alghero Sardinia

Though AHO is an international airport, you will not find direct flights to Alghero from Australia. Passengers will most likely find that flights to AHO Airport will be redirected to one or more transfer hubs, like Narita (NRT), Doha (DOH), Rome (FCO) and Paris (CDG).

Most flights will include combination flights in partnership with other airlines, and these include Alitalia, Atlantic Airways, EasyJet, RyanAir, Etihad, AirFrance and Qatar Airways.

Taxis can be located just outside the airport and can cost anywhere between 15-30EUR ($23-47), though the journey only takes around 15 minutes, depending on traffic.

By public transport

There is a bus run by ARST and called A.L.F.A., it is white and it runs approximately every hour into town. The real upside is that it costs only 1EUR ($1.60) for a ride, though you must purchase them at the small machine within the airport, or 1.50EUR ($2.30) if you get them on the bus.

There are lots of car rental companies that operate out of the airport if you’d prefer to drive during your stay in Sardinia. You can find all the major companies located in the car park nearest to the terminal, just outside the arrivals hall.

What can you do in Alghero?

The city of Alghero is unique in Sardinia, as in the 1300s, the island was given to the King of Aragon who in turn granted fiefdoms around Alghero to Spanish settlers. To this day you can see the Spanish influence by climbing the city walls, or visiting the 14th century cathedral in town with its Spanish detailing on the doorway. It is a city to lose yourself in; wander down the winding narrow streets and find a bar to have a drink in, or dine in the many cafes and restaurants that are known throughout the island for serving exquisite seafood.

Nearby Alghero, there is the cave complex called Neptune’s Grotto. You can get to this incredible cave by taking a boat, which will include the beautiful Porto Conte bay and the cliffs of Capo Caccia.

There is also the medieval town of Bosa, where a fortress sits on a hilltop that overlooks the town, here too you can see the Catalan influence of Spain. For real history buffs, it’s worth a visit Anghelu Ruju, a pre-historic necropolis where you can see a staggering 37 underground burial chambers.

For those that just want to kick back and relax, there are plenty of world class beaches to enjoy, from the busy Maria Pia, the coveted Le Bombarde to the gorgeous Mugoni beach, there are plenty of options for sun, sea and sand in Sardinia.

When should you go?

The months of May through to September are wonderful on Sardinia, the temperature typically stays between 23 and 31°C, and sunny days are the standard. Keep in mind that August tends to be the hottest, busiest month of the year, and thus the most expensive. Stick to the shoulder months of May and September if you want to encounter lots of sun, but much less tourists.
