Snorkelling and fishing makes me feel better

Warm Hospitality

Very close to White Grass Airport. Bungalows are basic but nothing you wouldn't expect when you consider the size and remoteness of Tanna itself. Some insects and gecko droppings in the room which is again not unexpected in any warm location and otherwise the cleanliness was very good. Several cats on the property to hunt rodents (which we never saw). Included breakfast each morning was simple but delicious. We had dinner each night at Alofa and once again the food was very good. Veronique puts in the extra effort at setting the table beautifully and was also kind enough to cook some local specialties as well, including making more simboro on the second night since we enjoyed it so much. John was great to have a chat to and also organised some kava for us to try after our evening at the volcano - be warned that Tanna kava is not for the faint hearted! The hospitality of John and Veronique certainly make Alofa a better place.

A hidden gem - Friendly local accommodation

We stayed 6 days with John, Veronique and their son John Mark and were so glad we chose this small beachfront operation rather than a big resort.
Great location , in small village of Lowanatum, a quick local bus ride to Lanakel Markets, shops and the Tamanu restaurant ( great pina coladas!).
John really helped us a lot with our plans in the way that bigger resorts would charge a lot more for. He arranged the volcano tour, Port Resolution, Yakel Kastom village and even a cooking lesson because I wanted to know how to make the Vanuatu snack Simboro. His wife Veronique arramged an inpromtu dancing display from her womens dancing group. We also paid a visit to the local Kava bar
If we had not ended up here i think out visit to Tanna would have been a lot more difficult and expensive - a little gem of a place.
P.S. if you are visiting from UK bring an England soccer shirt, he supports them, and soccer is huge on Tanna.
P.s.

The beach is lovely but eveything else is not! The staff are so slow to do anything like check in or serving food. And the mould in the bungalows is unbelievable. Every pillow was covered in mould as was the bathroom, which also smelled awful.
Breakfast was good although variable, one day a baguette and the next day just some sliced bread. Lunch and dinner were unbelievably slow- we were literally the only people there and it took an hour and 20 mins for lunch to arrive.

Being next to the village instead of being trapped in a resort was great. John is a fantastic host. Go with him and rely on his advice. He will show you real Tanna.
