Fabulous hotel

Beautiful hotel and spotlessly clean. We had a lovely big room on ground floor with a walk in shower. Stayed for 7 days and we didnt want to leave! Will definitely be back. Staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Food was really nice and service was fast. My son went in the pool everyday. Bit of a walk down the hill to get to town and the harbour but plenty of buses to take you back up the hill. Can't fault a thing.

I wanted it to be better

We have just returned from a few days at this hotel. It was such a mixed bag. I really wanted to be positive about this hotel. The room felt like it was at the back of beyond, when we finally made it there, it was a fantastic size. We found three coaches parked outside the window. The first morning of them leaving did not disturb me but the second morning, there were two coaches, one coach was started up around six am and the second coach around six thirty.
The decor is very old fashioned and the hotel and rooms would 100% benefit from refurbishment.
My daughters bed has seen better days and every time she moved it creaked.
The shower was quite poor, the shower head needs replacing, the water was spouting out the side of the shower head meaning it wasnt the best pressure. The shower gel dispenser is not in the best place, it is right in the way.
The breakfast window is a tight forty five minute time frame 8am- 8-45. The first morning we went for breakfast there was a mix up with our table, not sure if someone had sat on it or what, we were greeted by an abrupt man, who told us to wait in the bar area and someone will sort us out. His attitude irked me but the lovely receptionist who was helping on breakfast rectified the situation ( Charlotte I think her name was, a very colourful lady).
Breakfast was awful, I didnt realise it wasnt a buffet style breakfast. The full English was vile. They are obviously sat there waiting to go.
Second morning I had scrambled egg on toast. Just some sloppy scrambled egg with no flavour, slapped on toast which made the toast soggy. My husband had the eggs benedict without the sauce the muffin was dry. The eggs one was a funny colour and the other rock hard. The toast was the best part. No jams just marmalade which I cant stand. I think Breakfast could do with a little more selection. There needs to be more attention to detail. The teacups were stained and the sweetener was not powder, it had become all stuck together, makes me wonder how long it had been there. I ended up having sugar as at least it was granulated as expected.
The first morning housekeeping knocked on the door quite early but must have heard us in there so went away. Then around 7.45 she tried to come in again. I had just got out of the shower, she said she thought we may have left our do not disturb sign up by accident!
Then she returned for a third time around 4pm. We still had our do not disturb sign up!
The pool was the main reason we booked, this needs some maintenance.
When the kids used the handrail it moved and the lining around the top of the pool is coming away!
I also did not like having to walk through the dining room to go out and come back.
Overall it wasnt the best stay as we could have stayed at premier inn for a cheaper price and had a more up to date room and a better breakfast.
Such a shame as I say I wanted to be positive and this hotel could be amazing. At the moment it reminds me of visiting my nan in her care home

Honest review

Two nights away at the Devonshire hotel…
First thoughts hotel needs a renovation as it’s dated after two nights here - on second thoughts the decor suits the hotel perfectly and it has a family cosy feel to the place
Hotel has a pool which is at a perfect temp , not too cold and not hot either.
Breakfast is nice- scrambled egg was perfect! Only negative is the apple juice was Asda smart price which I’m not impressed at.
Staff - the two duty managers were lovely and welcoming . Sue (duty manager) especially and the young barman (dark hair) were fantastic.
Charlie at breakfast the waiter was attentive but gave us our space and also had wonderful customer service .
Shower - perfect temperature!
Evening entertainment was brilliant , bingo then an act!
Overall a nice refreshing weekend, lovely hotel and the staff were brilliant.
Thank you for a wonderful weekend Devonshire Hotel - ps just one thing was to upgrade your apple juice!

Will definitely return!

From start to finish all staff were really friendly, from the Coach driver to the lady who serviced our room.
If you require water or a soft drink it s cheaper to buy them from the Driver at £1 than from the shops on your rest stops - & they were chilled.
Asked for a ground floor room due to my Husbands mobility & this was provided, clean with a comfy bed, TV & kettle - plenty of tea & coffee provided. Hairdryer not provided but can get one from reception for a £5 deposit. Fans also available from reception, no deposit!
Shower okay, sink splashed over as it was shallow, toilet needed a couple of flushes at times.
Food was okay, I m quite a fussy eater & managed to find something every meal. If you want poached or scrambled egg on toast for breakfast ask for the toast separately as it will be soggy in the middle. Husband reckoned the kippers were really good with very few bones. The young Lady who served us was really helpful & efficient.
The bar/reception staff were excellent, big thanks to Sue, Sam & Courtney (sorted the WIFI on my Husbands phone) Drinks reasonably priced & plenty of notice for last orders if you want to stay up a little later. Sue even did an Irish coffee for a customer quite late on.
Snack bar also very reasonably priced, especially the packed lunch for your journey home.
Entertainment was good & 2 then 1 games of bingo before the artist.
Positioned on a steep hill with buses available during the day but we mainly used Torbay Taxis (01803211611) as they were honest about waiting times, reliable & very reasonably priced ie £13 to Paignton Harbour.
Altogether a really enjoyable stay at a very reasonable price.
Looking to book again soon!
