We were excited to visit the small town of Hexham to see the sites both in town and at the nearby Roman ruins along Hadrians Wall. Victoria Tap was both the perfect central location to do that and an overall great place to stay. We thought a pub might be noisy at night but we didn’t hear a thing in our room. Even through two World Cup matches. The staff was nothing but friendly and helpful. This hotel is a great value for the cost and we would recommend a stay. The room was larger than expected and the amenities were great.

Fabulous stay, spotlessly clean room, comfortable bed and lovely staff. Quite noisy as I was in a room facing the main road but I’m not used to the sound of traffic so probably wouldn’t matter to most people! All in all would highly recommend.

The bar was well stocked great pub atmosphere. Our twin room was lovely and spacious. Beds were comfy. Host were friendly left us in peace. The back door was easy quick exit for leaving. There is room for improvement on the corridor to the stairs of our room. Overall would happily stay again. Did not try the food.

Desperate need of deep clean and re-furb

The photos we’d seen pre-stay were obviously old as it was no where near as tidy and looked like it had never been cleaned since!
The pros: really central and the landlord seemed very friendly, though he told us parking was just round the corner and free. (Gave us the ‘real deal’ after we’d struggled to get in)
The sheets, towels, toilet bowl and wash hand basin seemed clean.
The cons: my twin room had two single beds, both with broken mattresses - I actually rolled out of bed as the mattress was so uneven.
The laminate floor was lifting in several places and had some mud and other debris. The skirtings, window ledge, open hanging rail and furniture were dirty and had places of extreme dust/debris. There was what looked like a huge soapy hand print on the shower screen frame, plaster falling and paint peeling! Then the elephant in the room a huge filthy and well worn chesterfield sofa which looked like it had been dragged from a skip. The deep buttons were full of dirt, the leather cracked and split, paint and other stains and the cushions were hanging off, plus matching chair and footstool which looked like the set of great expectations as the large guilt mirror above it was also sporting a pitted frame of grime!.
The first thing that hits is the strong chemical fragrance from two plug in defusers which have actually effected my poor dogs skin, and our nasal passages.
The narrow exit staircase was difficult to navigate with luggage and was constantly full of cigarette smoke which was stomach turning for two non-smokers and we had to stand on the stairs in order to open the Yale lock door which again was very difficult when carrying luggage.
We would have moved to another accommodation had it been available at short notice and we’d not just been staying two nights in this very dated and dirty hotel.
There was no apparent fire escape and no regulatory procedures on the doors in the event of a fire.
Not recommended
as it was small, cramped and basically a redundant bus stop, he then told us we were lucky to get in as it’s always full!)

Very good location
