Very good indeed!
We had a fabulous one night stay at this super restaurant/hotel. The staff were attentive and very relaxed which makes a stay at a Michelin starred place very laid back. The room was very comfortable and spacious even though we had the “cosy” version at the lower end of the rates. People may see from other reviews of ours that we have been lucky to have eaten at a few starred places so our assessment of the restaurant is based upon comps with others. Very good! The menu was beautiful, the food extremely tasty and the staff superb. All in all a very good experience and one we would like to repeat.

The standards don’t justify the cost
Having frequented a fair few Michelin hotels in our time, we found this one rather strange. Almost like it just didn’t know what it was. Rather casual and lower in standard than other similar establishments. There’s just a certain feel you get from a Michelin hotel and this just fell short, We left feeling rather discombobulated! The bar and restaurant were nice enough, difficult to get served though as there was no one around, it was a pleasant area but there just seemed something was missing. Can’t quite put my finger on it. The grounds were lovely and I imagine wonderful in the summer. The hotel room however was extremely disappointing, much smaller than expected and lacking attention to detail. And this was a master room too so the best that was on offer. Be very careful when selecting your room here as the rooms sizes and styles vary and the wrong room choice will ruin your experience. The food was pleasant but not the flavour explosion we’ve come to except from Michelin dining. Also the portion sizes were ridiculously small and we annoyingly found ourselves ordering £17.50 cheeseboards to fill the gaps! We are aware it’s a pictures on plates kind of affair when you book into somewhere like this, but even this was silly. The alcohol costs were also extortionate, around £12-20 for a glass of 125ml wine which is probably why not one table in the restaurant had a bottle of wine. They retailed anywhere from £50-£100 and upwards. I can’t say the service was outstanding either. You want to feel that staff can’t do enough for you at these prices, but it just wasn’t like that. Don’t get me wrong they were pleasant but that’s it. We’re fully aware that these kind of hotels cost more and you’re paying for a certain standard, ambiance and food service. But at almost £800 for the evening we left feeling rather ripped off! If we’d paid half the cost I would have thought, yeah ok, nice, not bad. But at that kind of money we left feeling annoyed at wasting that amount on a hotel stay which fell so short of our expectations. Hoteliers have to understand the more you charge the higher the expectation. You have to be able to back it up. There’s so many wonderful places you can stay in and around the Lake District that offer so much more for your money. The standards here don’t justify the costs. I can see why people would like it but unfortunately we won’t be returning.

Just first class
The food here is outstanding. We’ve been lucky enough to have eaten in several Michelin restaurants in the UK and Europe and this is up among the best.
Service is impeccable and not too formal. The restaurant has a very inviting and casual atmosphere, no airs and graces which is what we liked.
The room we had (The Oak) was also excellent and very large with an impressive bathroom. The bedroom has a great view of the surrounding area.
Another plus is they have 3 EV chargers which you can use with no charge (no pun intended)
All in all we would full recommend a visit here.

Exceptional dine and stay experience
Absolutely exceptional from start to finish. We can’t fault our experience, we felt like royalty during this Michelin dining experience, a very special stay for a special occasion. Can not recommend enough.

A Flawless Stay Derailed by One Bright Green Light
We had what should have been a truly perfect stay. From the moment we arrived, everything was exceptional—the setting, the attention to detail, and above all, the staff, who were warm, attentive, and effortlessly professional throughout. The Michelin-starred restaurant was a real highlight; the food was outstanding and made the experience feel genuinely special.
Unfortunately, our stay was completely let down by one unexpected issue in the room. A bright green light on the ceiling illuminated the bedroom throughout the night, to the point where it felt almost like trying to sleep with a light on. Despite how comfortable the room was otherwise, it made it incredibly difficult to get any rest, and we ended up having a very poor night’s sleep.
It’s a real shame, because everything else about the hotel was faultless. With such a simple issue addressed, this would easily have been a five-star experience.
