Perfection

Couldn't fault this place. The host was very informative and helpful on arrival and the room was clean, warm and comfortable with all the amenities you could need. We had room 9 on the top floor with a sea view. No curfew, could come and go as we pleased. Public carpark right opposite which was handy. Lovely views from the room. Would definitely stay again.

Bonfire night

Arrived at the Wavecrest for the bonfire and fireworks night, and Barmouth was as expected extremely busy but managed to find parking opposite the hotel in the pay and display, which cost us £9.30 for 24 hours. We were greeted by the owners Chris and Zelanie who seemed very friendly. Was asked to pay for room on arrival and was told that, unfortunately, we were on the top floor. We were in room #8 at the back of the hotel which we found to be comfortable, clean and very quiet. We knew at the time of booking it that there was no meal option, so we went for a 5 minute stroll into town for breakfast. All in all the hotel served our needs and hopefully we will visit again next year.

Barmouth guest house - negative experience

We recently stayed in Barmouth, Wales at the Wavecrest Guesthouse on 8 Marine Parade. Location was good, by the beach, with a promenade to walk along across from the accommodation. Our friend, who we were travelling with and who lives in a different part of Wales, had booked this place to stay. She had assumed it was a B & B, but it is just accommodation. That wasn't a problem, just a surprise.
On our arrival, Chris and Zelanie Hart, the owners, were there. Chris was polite enough; Zelanie seemed a bit dismissive. He asked for payment up front, which we did. Chris showed us to our rooms; ours was on the 2nd floor, room # 5. Our toilet didn't flush; we alerted Chris by phone, as both the owners had gone out.
We went to his recommended pub for dinner. When we got back his bull terrier dog greeted us in the foyer. The dog was making a growling sound; Chris promptly came into the foyer and reassured us the dog was "purring" not growling. Fine, but it shouldn't have been allowed to be there without supervision, even briefly, as we didn't know if it was friendly or not.
I asked Chris about our room, re the toilet, and he said he had fixed it. He came upstairs and showed us it did flush. Allegedly we had to push the lever more firmly. It seemed to be working, until 3am and it wouldn't flush, despite repeated attempts by both of us.
And then there was No hot water for the shower. My husband went and found Zelanie, as Chris was out, and she said that the hot water was forgotten to be turned on. Zelzanie remedied the hot water situation and apologised, but it didn't sound sincere; just perfunctory. She was able to make the toilet flush and gave us the impression that she thought we were dense. And then she said to the three of us, "You weren't happy when you arrived were you," implying that we were looking for trouble as soon as we arrived. It was hardly the case at all. In fact, there was a definite attitude oozing from Zelanie right from the start.
Zelanie said that Chris was on his way back. We put our luggage into the car and Chris turned up. Warren went to talk to him about the room issues; we had hoped there may have been some consideration given, bearing in mind the problems we had. No chance. Chris spoke aggressively to Warren, and Warren is not that type of guy to get fired up. Chris accused us of berating Zelanie, which was untrue. Chris pointed to his sign in front of their guest house with his mobile number on it and accusingly said "why didn't you call me?" Fair enough in one sense, but there shouldn't have been a need to. We didn't call him because we were talking with Zelanie who was on-site.
In retrospect it would have been better if Chris had just put us in a different room from the outset until the toilet issue was resolved.
We were in the UK for five weeks and of all our various places of accommodation, which were all B &Bs or hotels with breakfast included, this was the worst experience on all levels. Fortunately it wasn't our last place we stayed in, so we had another week of good experiences.
We do not recommend this establishment, or the town for that matter. It felt a bit rough at night, walking back from the pub. The only town we visited that gave that negative vibe.

Wouldn't stay again.

When we booked we thought breakfast was included which wasn't and we were then told there were lots of places to eat in the town. Over the years we have stayed in several places along the front that offer breakfast for a lot less and a more friendly atmosphere.
