Citadel Bed and Breakfast – Honest Review
The staff are genuinely kind and welcoming, and the price point reflects that budget-friendly appeal. The pool looks clean and inviting, though I didn’t use it personally.
That said, I’d be doing future guests a disservice if I didn’t mention a few things.
Noise is part of life here, dogs barking through the night, roosters at dawn, and motorbike traffic from the road. It faded into the background after a few nights, but light sleepers should come prepared. On one occasion a neighboring guest left their TV blasting at full volume at 2am with their door open. No one answered when I knocked, and since the property isn’t staffed around the clock, there was nothing I could do until the next day.
The name “Bed and Breakfast” is a little misleading. The included breakfast is eggs and toast daily. A Filipino option exists, rice and sausage – but costs extra at 119 pesos (about $2 USD). No alternatives were offered upfront, and the eggs made me sick most mornings. There is also a corkage fee if you bring your own alcohol, and cooking in your room is not permitted. The rules posted on the wall felt quite strict overall.
The biggest concern was the room itself. There was a persistent, heavy mildew smell throughout my stay, with visible mold on the grout and sealant in the bathroom. The towels smelled strongly enough that I rewashed them before use. Keeping the bathroom door closed during cleaning traps moisture and makes the smell worse, and turning the air conditioning off entirely while cleaning means returning after a long hot day to a warm, humid room. Housekeeping only happens on request, and even then the follow-through was inconsistent – bathrooms left uncleaned despite being asked. During dry season the dust is significant, and I woke up with a sore throat most mornings.
One security note: the in-room locker appears to lock but can be pulled open without a key. I would not trust it with anything valuable.
I wanted to love this place, and the kindness of the staff made it easy to stay. But the mold, the mildew, and the misleading breakfast experience are things every traveler deserves to know before booking.

Francois and Citadel, the owners are very nice and helpful. You will enjoy your at the Citadel!
BONUS TIP: Just up the road (north) to the left is a food store and cafe on the right side of the road. Inside is a dental office run by Dr Joy Zapanta. She offers a full range of dental services. I got my teeth cleaned for about US$20. I could see dental tourism as a future business for Dr Joy. Enjoy your stay at the Citaldel and get all your dental work done!
