Stylish luxury with outstanding service and an excellent breakfast

The Thief made a wonderful first impression. The architecture immediately caught my eye, and the moment I stepped inside I loved the atmosphere. The lobby is dark, cosy and beautifully designed, creating a very modern yet welcoming feel.
My room continued that theme perfectly. It was spacious, intelligently laid out and very comfortable, with beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows that flooded the room with natural light. I had requested a higher floor before arrival, and the hotel kindly accommodated my request. I really appreciated the effort, and I believe I received one of the better rooms available.
The only disappointment was the view. The hotel’s promotional photos give the impression that many rooms enjoy a wide, unobstructed panorama across the fjord. In reality, my room overlooked the marina with the water visible between neighbouring buildings. It was still a pleasant view, but not quite the sweeping waterfront vista the marketing had led me to expect. I think the photography sets expectations a little too high in that regard.
The staff deserve special praise. Every single member of staff I encountered, from reception to the breakfast team, was exceptionally friendly, professional and welcoming. Service throughout my stay was consistently excellent.
Breakfast was another highlight. The restaurant has a calm, elegant atmosphere and never felt crowded. The buffet was clearly focused on quality rather than quantity, with fresh produce, wellness shots, excellent breads, fruit, vegetables and plenty of thoughtful details that made it feel more refined than the average hotel breakfast. Scrambled eggs were available on the buffet, while one à la carte egg dish could be ordered without additional charge, which I found perfectly reasonable. I also appreciated that the staff happily brought me apple vinegar when I asked whether they had balsamic for my salad. Little touches like that made the experience feel genuinely attentive.
The spa is equally stylish. It features a lovely Finnish sauna, hammam, steam room and a beautifully designed relaxation area. The only drawback is the swimming pool, which is heated to around 35°C. After a proper sauna session, a pool that warm simply doesn’t provide any cooling. I think a temperature closer to 30°C would make it much more enjoyable. Guests are encouraged to cool off in the Oslofjord, which is only about a minute’s walk away, and while that’s certainly a unique Nordic experience, it does mean leaving the spa area wrapped in a towel.
Access to the spa comes at an additional charge, although hotel guests receive a reduced rate and spa treatment guests receive a further discount. Personally, I think complimentary access for guests booking treatments would be a welcome addition at this price level.
The location is excellent. There are numerous restaurants within a short walk, a Joker convenience store nearby, and many of Oslo’s attractions can easily be reached on foot.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The hotel’s design, atmosphere, comfort, breakfast and service are all outstanding, and I would happily return. A few small details prevent it from being absolutely perfect, but it remains one of Oslo’s most stylish and enjoyable luxury hotels.

Dear Sawena,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a thorough and thoughtful review of your recent stay with us at THE THIEF.
We are delighted to hear that our design, cozy atmosphere, and attentive service made such a strong first impression. It’s wonderful to know that our team successfully fulfilled your request for a higher floor, and that you thoroughly enjoyed our breakfast offering—especially the little details like the custom salad dressing request! We will be sure to pass along your high praise to our reception, breakfast, and spa teams.
We also deeply appreciate your constructive feedback. We aim to be as transparent as possible with our room categories and views, so your comments regarding marketing photography and expectations for the fjord views have been noted for our team to review. Furthermore, your insights regarding the spa pool temperature and our spa access pricing structure are incredibly helpful; input like yours directly informs how we refine the guest experience moving forward.
Thank you again for recognizing THE THIEF as one of Oslo’s most stylish luxury hotels. It was a true pleasure hosting you, and we look forward to welcoming you back for an even better stay in the future!
Warm regards,

The Thief Hotel was extremely well located and its staff excellent and very helpful. Our luggage was lost and hotel staff was aggressive in getting them returned before our cruise left.
The breakfast is very good and the roof top bar pleasant in good weather. The hotel restaurant has a limited menu but there are many good restaurants within a short walk.
Our room was clean and well laid out but the “balcony “ is not worth the extra cost. Serif our room was excellent.
We would recommend The Thief in Oslo.

Air conditioning is centrally controlled - room temperature and humidity unbearable

I am deeply disappointed with my stay at The Thief. For a luxury 5-star hotel charging premium rates, guests should absolutely have the right to control their own room temperature. The hotel explicitly advertises air conditioning, but the thermostats are centrally locked. It relies on a central ventilation system that does not cool the room down properly. I could not lower the temperature to a comfortable level, which severely impacted my sleep and overall comfort. Advertising AC without giving guests actual control over it is completely misleading at this price point. I would not recommend this property if you value a cool, controllable room

Nice place to stay

What a great hotel. I have traveled the world and this is one of the nicest. Martin the GM is very accessible to the guests. He is always out walking around and talking with guests and being responsive. Kenan is a great waiter at the roof top. He is very focused on provided outstanding service and accommodating guests. Adrienne did a great job in recommending restaurants and places to go. Overall an outstanding job. I would stay there again.

WOW—thank you so much for such a thoughtful and generous review! Hearing that we’re one of the nicest hotels you’ve experienced across all your world travels truly made my week.
Being out and about talking with our guests is one of my favorite parts of the job, so it means a lot to know that meant something to you. I’ll be sure to pass along your special shoutouts to Kenan at the rooftop and Adrienne at the desk—they both take so much pride in what they do, and knowing they helped make your stay so memorable will make them smile!
We’d love nothing more than to welcome you back next time your travels bring you our way.
Warm regards,
Martin
