People with years of experience in the hotel world.

We had dinner here with the family, a warm welcome, and a delicious dinner on the terrace outside. A compliment to the kitchen and the service people who know their trade. A reason to go back here again.

just about right

We were in Roggel for a friends wedding and they recommended this hotel for our 2night stay.
Its an old inn right in the middle of the very small village, next to the main shop, main church and the post office and local weekend market. Everything you need is within 50m.
It has its own private parking and restaurant with terrace.
We had a close to midnight arrival time and the owner prepared everything to be ready for us.
Our room was very small but clean and functional just on the 1st floor with a private bathroom and very tiny windows.
During the summer heatwave it has proven its worth as not much sun was getting in keeping a cool environment.
All furnishings seem to be from a bygone era including the ancient tv and bathroom fittings but it was all part of the antiquated charm of this establishment.
Obviously things like sound proofing or keycard entry should not even be considered as to not create false expectations.
Breakfast was served by the host and it was basic but well made and carefully presented.
We tried the a la carte menu for lunch and diner and everything was good but nothing extraordinary.
We even had the privilege of a couple of bycicles for a day to ride around at no extra cost.
The value for money aspect is tricky to determine as services in Holland are pretty expensive, so we have to say that in our opinion it does not deliver enough to justify its fares, but compared to the rest of the country we have later seen in our multi-city holiday - this could be called decent affordable accomodation.

Very poor

Sorry, but poor. Rooms are not well insulated, hear everything.
Food: strange pricing. If you buy a 4 course meal, it's 34 euros. Prices per meal are not specified. If you buy a 4 course meal, but add one thing, the 4 course meal is suddenly prices per separate item........ 15 euros more!!! When I pointed this out, I was told that this is the way it is. What a scam.
Food rather basic, some jars here and there, nothing special. Pity
Across the square is a wonderful place, called " Preuverie Bekkers Marie", which is far superior. More choice, fair pricing and super food. I would go there.

Just what we needed, not fancy but clean and comfortable

Booked via booking.com
This hotel was just what we were looking for. Stayed here for 3 nights while family was staying at a nearby campground. Rooms were small, but clean and comfortable. Bathroom is modern and clean with a walk in shower. It is a small hotel located over a restaurant. There are narrow staircase going upstairs so this could be a problem for some. Breakfast was great. Owners were friendly. This hotel was a good value for the price. I would stay here again.

Surprisingly Nice Stay - Not Fancy But Met Our Needs Well

We booked De Beukelaer via Booking.com as the pictures showed a decent looking hotel that included breakfast and had en suite facilities. The rate was very decent at €60 so we went for it. Our travel companion forgot to mention that check in was by 2000 and we were later than that (did not arrive until 2115) but the proprietors were gracious. It is a small hotel with approx 6 rooms run by a couple. The main business is a restaurant and bar that appeared to be open until 2100 the night we were there (Monday). We were led to our rooms by one of the owners up a narrow staircase (access to rooms would be difficult for anyone who has impaired mobility). The building was built in 1760 so there in't much hope of widening the staircase or adding an elevator.
We were hungry and asked about getting dinner in the restaurant. We were told the dining room was closed but we were offered a "plate of sandwiches" and were told to come downstairs in 10 minutes. When we went downstairs we were presented with a lovely plate of five assorted open faced sandwiches of ham, cheeses, liverwurst and salmon on nice crusty white bread. It was a perfect meal that we very much appreciated. The price was also very reasonable.
Our booking receipt said the rooms were "simply furnished" but our room wasn't furnished much differently than most European hotels/guest houses that I have experienced and the room had more space than most. The shower was large and invigorating and there was plenty of nice hot water. The beds were a little soft but we slept fine. The room was very clean and tidy and well cared for. There was a TV and a desk but no coffee service in the room. We had a lovely peppermint on each pillow. You can tell the proprietors take pride in doing the best job they can with the available rooms.
Breakfast was nice and was brought to our table as we were the only guests in the dining room at that time. There were three of us so we had a basket of five different types of bread (3 each), three soft boiled eggs, three yogurts, a plate of cheese and a plate of assorted meats. Orange juice and coffee were available and our requests for additional juice and coffee cream were cheerfully met.
I absolutely thought the stay was value for the money. The lodgings were neat and tidy, breakfast was satisfying and the price was right. I highly recommend "De Beukelaer".
