A good non-luxurious peaceful riad, out of the main Medina
Note- if you get a taxi from the airport, they can’t take you all the way to the riad as there is no motor access through most of the narrow streets, so you’ll be met with a porter with a cart for your suitcase, to lead you the final 10 minutes to the riad on foot - impossible to find without!
The grandeur of its central courtyard is typical of Moroccan riads, with a fountain, beautiful columns and indoor flower bed stretching up 2 storeys to the covered roof.
However it was chilly in January. The tiled double bedroom on 2nd floor was clean and comfortable but not luxurious, with an en-suite and a good hot powerful shower and plenty of wardrobe space. The radiator was on but it was chilly at night even with an overhead fan heater. Wifi coverage good throughout. The mattress was extremely firm.
There is also access to a small roof garden if you are lucky to get some sunshine.
Breakfast was included but not very appetising. The coffee was awful, in a thermos jug and had clearly been standing there a very long time. The eggs got cold instantly due to the room temperature, and there were a variety of homemade pancakes (msemen)/toast/cake and orange juice with margarine and jams, and some sliced apple/banana- nicely presented but not the best quality food we’ve eaten in Morocco by a long shot.
However you can walk to a wide choice of Salons de thé (cafes) within 15 minutes and get a good coffee.
We had outstanding customer service from the waiter/hotel assistant Mohammed who went over and above to make sure we were happy, and even accompanied us out on our first night when we arrived after dark but wanted to see a little of the old city, as he was worried we’d get lost. He also recommended good local eating places for our evening meals and even had someone come to accompany us there.
The hotel is quiet and relaxing but be prepared to walk a lot and if (when!) you get lost in the maze of streets, everyone will want to be your guide (often unwanted) to take you to where you’re going- walking extremely fast and then expecting to be paid. Beware the local scam of being told the road is closed /there’s no way through so that you’ll need a guide! We found google maps worked fine all but the final day.
