Still very special, after all these years
(1) An extraordinary sense of place
The spectacular natural setting, exquisite design language and immense sense of place speak for themselves. I won’t comment too much on these, as they are truly things one needs to see and feel to believe.
(2) Strong philosophies, deeply embedded.
What impresses us is how deeply the property is built around its own philosophies, from the thoughtful incorporation of local elements, to its approach to ethical and sustainable hospitality, and, perhaps most tellingly, the remarkable longevity of its frontline associates. This is something that feels increasingly rare, not only in Langkawi but even by Malaysian standards.
(3) A remarkable refusal to become complacent.
This is perhaps what stands out most to us. After more than three decades at the very top of the offering, The Datai continues to evolve. New activities are introduced with thoughtful discoveries, menus are continually reinvented, and we find ourselves pleasantly surprised every time we return. The only thing that never seems to change is the warmth and that warmth is what gradually turns guests into part of the Datai family.
We also experienced a few minor hiccups early in our stay, which we shared with the management team. What impressed us was the receptiveness and, more importantly, the follow-through. Feedback was acted upon promptly, with no performative apologies and no defensiveness. No tells, all shows. The improvements were immediately felt.
In the end, we were once again reminded of what makes The Datai so special and why, after all these years, we keep coming back.

It is reassuring to know that our sense of place and the philosophies behind what we do continue to remain at the heart. I also greatly appreciate your kind words about our team’s receptiveness and follow-through as well as that the warmth is perhaps the one thing that never changes.

Understated luxury in the middle of the Malaysian rainforest
When we arrived, we met the General Manager, Stephane, who welcomed us personally and took time to explain the facilities and the core 'Datai eco philosophy'. They also left us some nice touches, like some champagne in our room for the anniversary which was appreciated.
The Datai resort is located in the heart of a 10 million-year-old rainforest, and the hotel design is very much in keeping with this concept. If you think luxury is all about glass, steel, and flashy ornaments, this isn’t your kind of place. The architecture is subtle, understated, and designed for integration into the environment. It really felt like living next to nature; it was not unusual to see adventurous monkeys exploring the corridors and colorful hornbills flying overhead. The place itself is just very peaceful—there is even a roadside sign as you approach the resort which reiterates “Don’t rush – You are on island time”!
The customer service fits the environment perfectly. The well-resourced hotel staff are friendly and attentive, but not in your face or intrusive. No one seems to be in a rush, and this creates a relaxed and easygoing feel throughout the resort.
The food and drinks at the various different restaurants were excellent, with a variety of different regional and Western foods to try and the pristine white sand beach overlooking the turquoise Andaman Sea is stunning and lives up to expectations. We also treated ourselves to a relaxing couples massage at the secluded Serenity Spa which was great. We came away feeling rejuvenated and energized. Thank you, Datai team for your hospitality; we would definitely look forward to a return visit!

Thank you for choosing The Datai Langkawi to celebrate this milestone, it was a pleasure to welcome you and your wife.
I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed experiencing both the Canopy Suite and Rainforest Villa and your observation that the architecture feels as though it belongs within the rainforest rather than competing with it is beautifully put.
It is equally rewarding to know that you felt this relaxed spirit in the service, dining experiences, and your time at Spa. We are delighted that you left feeling rejuvenated, and we hope your anniversary memories of The Datai will stay with you for many years to come.
On behalf of the team, thank you once again for allowing us to be part of such a special celebration. We would be very happy to welcome you both back whenever you are ready to return to island time.
Warm regards,
Stephane Duvacher

The Most Amazing Hotel we have ever stayed in
We had booked a taxi from the Datai to collect us from the Berjaya and they arrived in the Datai mini van, it was such a beautiful sight to finally see something with The Datai written on it. After a short 30 min drive we finally arrived at the front gates, drove down the access road to the entrance. We have arrived.
We had reserved a rainforest villa and the hotel had upgraded us to a premium rainforest villa (No 9), overlooking the small stream, with the sounds of the rainforest outside. Our villa was superb, beautifully furnished, a welcoming bottle of champagne on arrival with cakes and other sweeties. We immediately had monkeys on our roof, (new guests, they must have food!!). Everyday breakfast was absolutely delicious, everything was fresh, only slight problem we had was that my wife had ordered a crab omelette on morning and it took over 30 mins to arrive (it was delicious, just had to wait for them to catch the crab I think). We ate dinner in each of the restaurants, our fav being the Gulai house, we ate twice there. Lunch by the pool was also really good, very good quick service. The staff handed out ice cream daily and fresh fruit (watch out for the 12 o'clock Hornbill though, he will steal your grapes!!). We did various free and paid walks, make sure you book them though, they fill up very quickly. We also had a session in the Spa (our most expensive Spa ever, costing over £500 for the 2 of us, worth it though). We spent our 30th Wedding Anniversary day there, and even though we had booked an outside photographer and makeup (recommended by the hotel) to do a photo and video shoot around the grounds of the Datai, the hotel really looked after us, especially Prem Prabakaran and her team, thank you so much for making our day very enjoyable and memorable.
We attended the Cocktails evening while we were there, put on by the hotel management and we were both able to sit down and have a good chat with the hotel manager and tell him how much we love The Datai and let him know the No 1 thing that makes this hotel stand out, and that is the STAFF. Everyone, I mean everyone was absolutely brilliant, extremely friendly and you could see they really enjoyed their jobs and enjoyed working for The Datai and its guests.
It took us 30 years to get here, and the wait was most certainly worth it. We are already planning our return (and will stay longer). Any chance you can move Langkawi a bit closer to the UK though???

It is wonderful to read how much enjoyed your time with us, especially after waiting so many years to finally experience The Datai. Reading how you first hoped to stay with us for your honeymoon in 1995, only to have your 25th anniversary plans interrupted by Covid, makes it especially meaningful to know that your 30th anniversary finally brought you here.
We are so happy that the wait was worth it, and even more so that you chose to celebrate such a special milestone with us. Knowing that the rainforest, the Rainforest Premium villa, the wildlife, dining experiences, spa session, and all the little moments along the way became part of your anniversary memories means a great deal.
We will also be sure to share your kind words with Prem and other team members as well. Knowing that you felt the genuine warmth and happiness of our team is incredibly meaningful to us and we are very proud that this stood out most during your stay.
If only we could move Langkawi closer to the UK, we certainly would! Until then, thank you once again for choosing us as your favorite and we look forward to welcoming you on your future visit to Langkawi.
Warm regards,
Stephane Duvacher

20th Anniversary - Sooo Good
The Datai reservations member had kindly arranged for the room to be readied with an anniversary them which was very much appreciated by my wife and I, many thanks!
We arrived around 6pm so I assume most people were having sundowners at the beach or in their rooms showering, as the atmosphere was very serene indeed and all the staff in the lobby bar were very warm and helpful. So, tapas and a double of the Datai's own branded gin (from Italy) at the lobby bar and to bed, as we had an early and quick breakfast and golf at The Els Club planned the following morning.
We were treated very well by some familiar faces at The Els Club and the caddies Irfan and Lee did a magnificent job as usual guiding us around the beautiful resort, resulting in some lovely golf from my wife who beat me very convincingly!!
After some drinks at The Datai and a very nice meal at the superb Gulai restaurant where we met and chatted with the butler from the well known BBC tv hotel show, we were tucked up in bed by 8.30pm for a solid 10 hours of wonderful sleep in one of the best beds ever, just delightful.
A two-hour majestic breakfast and then a gentle walk down to the beach for a nice walk on the sand to enjoy a coffee with champagne and a lovely chat with the wonderful 'Sitiana', who has worked at the Beach Club for some time now and has always made us feel so welcome. Thank you Sitiana.
A very sad time flying home to Malaysia's capital, twin-towered city. Two days just is not long enough at all, but entire Datai team and all at the Els Club made the trip unforgettable for us both.
See you 'next year' for at least one week. A thousand thanks.
