Great location for exploring the old city

Accommodation in a perfect location. Easy to get to places of interest, and my room was a lovely haven when it was cold outdoors. Staff friendly, and got very clear instructions for the property. Loved the old elevator! Close to reliable public transport, and supermarkets.

Very unprofessional and aggressive staff - would not recommend

We had a very negative experience with Valdemāra Residence. When we arrived in the morning, the front desk worker told us we could place our bags in the sitting area. We went out for a bit and explored the city, then came back for check in. While waiting, one member of our group was feeling unwell, so we sat down briefly before checking in. There was already someone in line.
A staff member suddenly came in and yelled at us, asking what we were doing. This was extremely confusing, as we had explicitly been told to put our bags there and had already been given the key code to enter the building. The tone was aggressive and highly unprofessional.
Later, after we left, we received an angry and accusatory message claiming we had broken rules and even threatened to post our pictures and name online. This is completely unacceptable behavior from any accommodation provider.
The issue they referenced involved a small amount of water escaping from the shower due to what appeared to be a drain problem. It stayed within the bathroom, and we intended to notify staff but no one was present at the front desk. Instead of addressing this professionally, they sent threatening and hostile messages.
Accidents happen, but the way staff handled the situation was inappropriate and uncomfortable. We would not stay here again.

Terrible

It smelled bad. The woman was extremely rude. The toilet smelled extremely bad. We only came to stay one night but it was a terrible experience. I would never recommend here. Also when we came back at night we were locked out and had difficulty getting in.

Dirty, noisy & unhelpful staff

We were here with a group of friends for a week and did not like it. The location is nice is the only nice thing I would say about it.
The place is one flat in a big old building. The rooms to the front are very nosy, even with the windows closed, many of us found it hard to sleep. The beds are squeaky and some mattresses felt more like a bath tub, others were ok. There are few to no hangers in the cupboards and often only one small bedside lamp per room beside the neon light.
But the worst was the close to non-existing cleaning. There is staff around 24h but the most they seem to do is mob the floor in the week we were there - that's after we asked for cleaning. The showers had the same shampoo and toothpaste stains from the beginning to end and I don't want to think what the others stains were. The toilet of the male bathroom could not close the door because of a construction error. The female showers were build into the washing machine room and looked like festival showers.
You are asked to put the toilet paper into bins, not the toilet itself, but the bins are overflowing.
The kitchen has no dish washer. Broken appliances stand around.
The staff has 24 hour shifts and only some speak English.

Overall good if u don't mind the 'stricter' regime run by oldr women but keeps noise&energy efficiency down&tidiness up

1-2/7
We three British middle-aged guys were on our last week of a tour of Lithuania and Latvia. As Latvia's transport infrastructure is still developing we had to return to Riga as a central hub to get anywhere. This was our first stay in Riga in four years.
We booked this Hostel in advance from Daugavpils and arrived in Riga station on Saturday 1/7/17 at 16:30 in the pouring rain. Working out the route in the dry using maps.me on foot we made our way, stopping at the overcrowded coffee place (no service so left) and the Gumball3000 Rally cars lined up on an avenue. We got to the Hostel at 17:30 and entered using the door PIN no problem. The entrance was quite spacious so up the grand central stairwell two floors (ground being level one here) we hiked up to the third floor.
Ringing the door bell, it was opened by a cheerful and friendly young woman receptionist. She efficiently checked us in and gave us two NFT cards for room entry and one for the back entrance for after 23:00. She took us to room one then showed us the common kitchen and showers opposite our room.
The room one was a large, fresh and brightly furnished room with three good size single beds covered with clean sheets and towels. They proved comfortable overnight.
The room was lit with modern overhead halogen sets of spotlights and there were plenty of sockets by the beds and even an Ethernet wired-in wifi booster so there were good speeds and service (4-8ms Ping, 20MBps up and 20down at 01:05 Saturday 2/7/17).
Two of the three angle-poise lamps were not working but on asking the receptionist this was quickly remedied with a new halogen bulb for one and new whole lamp for the other.
There were three tall and narrow wardrobes with rail but no hangers or hooks so pretty useless for hanging jackets. Maybe the hangers were pinched. Clothes shops chuck them out in the mornings so maybe worth scouting around for basic but free ones. There were no hooks in the walls unfortunately.
We got back from the Folkklub bar/restaurant at midnight and crashed after having eaten and drunk well. After 11 the front doors are locked so there is only access round the back service entrance (using a separate smartcard) and up the tradesmen's stairs. No problem, it's not a grand staircase like the main one!Overnight was quiet despite being opposite showers and loos, so we had a good sleep.
In the morning we skipped making coffee as we had run out and there was no communal 'free food' box (I asked the receptionist and she said they had only just opened so this was not a priority but they would bear a free good box/fridge shelf in mind. Recycling is not evident, as a common bin was full of everything, maybe this will be initiated later?
Staff popped heads round the shower door to check if people were using shower room when lights were on and no shower noises! I'm sure they've seen it all before!! They were saving money and the environment so full marks to them!!!
Some have complained about the state of the showers and toilets. They are fine and clean. The shower room is probably going to be renovated as it seems to be the last on a long list of things already done.
Overall a good place2stay if u don't mind the 'stricter' regime run by older women but it keeps noise & energy efficiency down&tidiness up
