City Hotel with Natural Hot Springs
There was a performance I really wanted to see at the Prefectural Arts and Culture Center (Grantois) in Masuda, Shimane Prefecture, so I stayed there as well as traveling. One of the best parts of traveling is that you can find biscuits and gastronomy in the local shops on the night the stage springs. The hotel's location was within a few minutes' walk of downtown.
The hotel building is still new, and the lobby and rooms look like beautiful city hotels. I was also happy that the public bath was a natural hot spring.
According to HP, it is an alkaline natural hot spring that can be expected to be effective for beautiful skin by "source pouring (combined heating and circulation filtration)" that luxuriously uses underground springs.
I also chose this hotel because the parking lot was flat and there was a relatively large amount of space for parking compared to the number of rooms. Because it is flat, it was possible to store larger cars such as height, width, and overall length. It is free for guests.
The hotel building is still new, and the lobby and rooms look like beautiful city hotels. I was also happy that the public bath was a natural hot spring.

Fashionable hotels in Masuda
We stayed at the MASCOS Hotel in Masuda, Shimane, which is said to be a "new sense craft hotel".
The common areas, such as the lobby and restaurant, were made of wood and white walls, and the building and facilities were new, making it a fashionable hotel. The room was clean and comfortable.
I was also happy to soak in Masuda Onsen in the public bath on the second floor.
Breakfast was pretty substantial, and mackerel boiled in miso, hashed pork and chicken lemon cream were just as good.
In terms of conditions, it looks like Dormy Inn was fancy and had a restaurant bar. Unfortunately, however, the Dormy Inn did not offer such things as night-singing soba, which is free.
The weekend rate was about 15K yen per night for two people. I think it's expensive.
I think it is an optional hotel for those looking for a reasonable hotel in Masuda, Shimane.

Everything is good!
I much enjoyed my first stay at the Mascos in May 2023, and was keen to book the room with the beautiful young olive trees on the balcony again. It turned out someone else had already booked it for my third night (a Friday) but I had such good memories of that room and those trees that I decided to endure the hassle of changing rooms on day 3. I'm pleased to report the trees were flourishing and my second stay was just as good as my first! The room itself features beautiful wood and is spacious with a large bed, two bedside tables, easy chair, padded stool, small table, large tv and lots of hanging space. The balcony is big with nice city views (and those special trees) and a couple of chairs (but the weather wasn't conducive to lingering).
There's a lobby inside the entrance where you leave your luggage and your shoes. The bathroom is off this lobby and is a reasonable size. Very nice Provinscia toiletries.
The room I had for the third night was good too, albeit smaller and with no balcony. It had tatami matting and a Japanese table with cushions on the matting. Another large tv, comfy bed, beautiful wood, similar bathroom, and nice views right to the sea.
The staff are diligent in ensuring guests' needs are met, and there were no issues with the change of room. My luggage was stored until check-in time on day 3. Breakfast buffets had fresh and tasty options, and the evening meals were great (you can order them then pick them up, there's no room service as such). The Mascos sells (and provides in the rooms) its own drip coffee and it's very good. They also have the best electric jugs I've encountered in a hotel - not too big, and the slim spouts make pouring so much better! Oh, and quirky retro clock/radios.
The hotel is about a five minute walk from the station, and there are supermarkets and some other shops nearby. Many of the city's wonderful sights are within walking distance. I hope to return again in future (and try the onsen, which I haven't done so far!).

Highly recommended!
As soon as I was ushered into the lobby of my apartment, 702, I knew I was going to love it. The combined bedroom/living area had a wooden sliding door and fixed window framing the ceiling-to-floor view of the balcony and sky. On the balcony were 10 sweet young olive trees in planter boxes, so lovely! Interesting views all around of the city and mountains, and a great place to sit in the evening after a day's sightseeing. The light inside was excellent, as was the lighting, and the spaces were well-designed, with lots of room to move and featuring attractive wood. The large bed was very comfortable, with a choice of pillows. There was a small safe, a mini fridge, and ample power sockets. The little table was a tad low for laptop work, but the bench where the tv was standing could be used instead. There was a deep bath and nice Provinscia toiletries. I didn't try the hotel's onsen. Shoes were removed in the lobby, where luggage could be stored and coats hung up, prior to stepping up into the living area. A yukata was provided. There was no disturbing noise from other rooms or in general; the apartment was secure, quiet and private.
Housekeeping was every 3 days, other than collection of rubbish and replacement of towels, etc if needed. (It was a pity the slippers I'd been using were removed and replaced on the last of my 3 days there.) Complimentary bottles of water every day, and nice green tea. (I liked the unusual shape of the jug!) Breakfast choices were good and the food was tasty. I also enjoyed two take-out meals from the restaurant in the evenings. All the staff were helpful and friendly, and would go out of their way to look after guests. Many thanks to the young man on Reception who spoke good English and assisted me in various useful ways (I'm sorry, I've forgotten his name, I should've written it down)! The hotel sells its own drip coffee bags - they were great so I bought some to take with me, as they were better quality than I'd had elsewhere. (A small number of items are for sale in the Reception area.)
The hotel is in a great location about 5 minutes walk from the station, with supermarkets, buses and the river close by. The main sights are 10-30 minutes walk away. I recommend Grand Toit, Ikou-ji, Manpuku-ji and Takatsu Kakinomoto Shrine for starters. The young man told me that not many international travellers visit the city - you're missing out! Masuda is also a great base for day trips - I went to Tsuwano and Hagi. I hope to return to the Mascos in future!
