Small is beautiful

I stayed 3 nights in Rengein. The room, a Japanese style one, is spotless. There is a toilet and basin for washing in the room but the bath room, Japanese style, is a public one with time restriction (typically from 7 to 9 pm).
The lady (sorry forgotten her name) in the front desk speaks very good English and the chief monk (or abbot) also speaks some English. The front-desk lady was very friendly and always ready to offer help. The abbot was also very willing to spend his precious time explaining Shingon Buddhism to me. Thank you so much.
Breakfast and dinner (all vegetarian) are included. And they're simply excellent. They're so elegant and meticulously prepared. I'm so grateful to the kitchen staff for their time and effort in preparing such wonderful meals.

Good experience overall

This place is a Buddhist temple where you actually coexist with the monks. this is a place where there are shared facilities and where the timings for bothing and eating are pre defined and very strict.The rooms are comfortable, and they have heating, which was very good for the time I was staying where it was rather cold, however, outside of the rooms it is generally very cold. you have access to attending the meditation of the monks which is a wonderful experience and totally worth the trip. The place offers both breakfast and lunch which are 100% Japanese style and very delicious.
It is a very beautiful building and bery peaceful although the large number of guests turns the experience much less spiritual than it could have been.
I do not recommend this place for someone wanting comfort. I wouldn’t recommend it either for someone expecting a fully spiritual experience; for anybody wanting something in between this is a very good option.

Zen

My stay with head-monk Kyosay (I'm likely spelling it incorrectly), his family and staff at Rengein was the highlight of my trip to Japan. It was the perfect conclusion to my travels- the monastery is quiet, their hospitality traditional and uniquely Japanese and the food was outstanding. I cannot imagine how many hours they labor over food preparation; it seemed a shame to eat it as the presentation was as a work of art. The room was simple- tatami, mattress, table, cushion and a fridge. Bathroom was very clean on the sento/bath spotless and relaxing. WiFi in room was strong. I highly recommend staying at Rengein. Assure you attend morning prayers with Kyosay!!

Very serene

An old temple with rather modern accommodation. The rooms were very comfortable and spotless. Yakuta available.We had a lavatory and basin but communal showers/onsen. Futon beds very comfortable - we slept soundly through the typhoon. We stayed for one night and both breakfasts/dinners were beautifully presented, excellent quality and bountiful portions. It was rather embarrassing we could not eat everything.Morning prayers were at 6.30am and it was a lovely experience. Afterwards we saw behind the scenes with good explanations from the monk. Very well run family business.

Simplicity & Serenity

Renge-in is one of several temples that provide accommodations in Koyasan. This one is a smaller temple that dates to the 1600's and is located near the center of the town, just off the main street. The complex is centered around a courtyard, with the main temple and support buildings along the sides. The accommodation building appears to be new though it fits well with the existing architecture.
My wife and I stayed here for just one night in May, ‘18, as part of a small group tour of mostly British and American visitors. For most of us this was our first experience in a monastic compound and it provided an interesting glimpse into this devotional lifestyle. Our 2nd-floor rooms were good sized, simply furnished and Japanese-style, with tatami mat floors and futons for sleeping. Each room had its own toilet and vanity, which were very nice, but showers and baths were part of the shared onsen.
Dinner and breakfast were vegetarian and both quite good, served in a large multipurpose room on the ground floor. Visitors are invited to attend early morning devotional exercises in the main temple, which a number of us did. Afterwards the head monk gave us an interesting tour of the temple treasures.
It is a little hard to evaluate Renge-in on regular TA criteria, because we have nothing with which to compare it. It was certainly welcoming, comfortable and serene. Perhaps in this special place those are the most important qualities.
