As so often: pluses and minuses!

Here a 4-day package spent with wife. The room was average in size. The bathroom was spacious unlike the shower. It was cramped and had a small shower head. Watching TV could only be done from the bed. Despite the many Dutch guests, there was only 1 Dutch channel to receive (NPO 2}; a setback. The beds mattresses were very soft and therefore not comfortable. The hotel has no elevator. This meant for us on the 2nd floor 4 stairs up and down. With luggage this was not easy.
The SauerlandCard was part of the package, but we had to ask for it. Both breakfast and the 3-course dinner were generous and good taste. Sufficient choice, the breakfast (buffet) left nothing to be desired. Strange experience: the drinks used had to be paid daily and below 15 euros only cash could be paid. The dutch hostess was friendly unlike her partner (?) who was sacherish throughout our stay and not exactly welcoming. Too bad! Ample parking opposite the hotel and plenty of walking opportunities. The town of Altastenberg is not much, but Winterberg is only a few kilometers away from the hotel.

Too expensive, dirty, boring breakfast

We were at the beginning of February 2026 for hiking in Altastenberg. For just under 100€/night you can expect cleanliness and a more lovingly designed breakfast with more choice even in high season. First of all, the positive. The "female" staff was super nice and helpful. Unfortunately, that was all positive. My room had not been properly cleaned before arrival. There was a stain and black lint on the bed sheet. There were some black chunks on the floor next to the trash can. In some places, dust hasn't been wiped for some time. After the first night I hung the note on the door asking to clean the room. Only the bed was made. Cleaning work and the visibly dirty sheet were not replaced. Breakfast was, let's say you get full, but it wasn't great. There was only sliced cheese, cold cuts, processed cheese and liver sausage from the plastic packaging to choose from. The scrambled eggs seemed to have been warmed up from the day before. Dan Fabian it still canned fruit, yogurt and cereal. I am used to much better things from my hotel stays. Unfortunately, bread and rolls are nowadays almost everywhere only manufactured goods from plastic and for baking. Too bad there are STILL good local bakers.
My conclusion: Even if the decor and bathroom are already old, you can still expect cleanliness.

Dated 80s stay

I have been to this region many times but will not recommend this.
Value for money, the female host and because it is located in Altastenberg, for that I want to give this hotel a 3.
The remaining parts have struck me as frightened.
The hotel is dated and the food is prepared based on ready meals from the Aldi. The Salad Bar is very sad and 80s, 5 glass bowls with Carrot and Pasta Lat straight from plastic containers, nicely draped
Little authenticity, little soul, little...
Too bad, I imagined more of it.

An absolute turn-off – never again!

We had booked two nights for two people at Hotel Altastenberg in Winterberg, but due to illness we unfortunately had to cancel. Instead of showing any kind of understanding, we were nicely presented with a €300 cancellation fee.
The reasoning of the hotel? Cancellation is only possible free of charge if this is done six (!) weeks in advance. Like someone can predict six weeks in advance that they're going to get sick. This is not welcoming, this is pure money-beating.
A hotel that deals with its guests in this way clearly shows that they are not about Service or Welcoming, but only about raking in as much money as possible. Flexibility and customer friendliness are far from here.
We will never book here again and advise everyone to stay far away from this hotel. There are plenty of alternatives in Winterberg where you will be treated with respect and humanity.

Cozy classic hotel.

Nicely located and cozy classic hotel with very friendly Dutch owners. Located very high so often snow sure in winter. Large parking space in front of the door. Nice car, hiking, cycling and possibly skiing trips to make from the hotel. Not too expensive and good tasty meals. Neat simple rooms with good beds, slightly outdated bathroom and which are not noisy.

Very good location
