outstanding value

This hotel is some distance from Kiel, but it is near family, so I chose it. It is clean, well-run, and has excellent breakfasts. Other meals are fine, but the breakfast are outstanding. This is a bare-bones hotel, but an outstanding value.

For transit/short stay

15 min drive south of Kiel this seems to be a typical “road side inn” for travelers on transit between north and south but also frequented by the locals. We upgraded to de luxe room in the annex building away from the busy road. Large room, functional but not at all cosy. Both room and bathroom with a little outdated feeling. Friendly staff. Good breakfast served in the historic restaurant with atmosphere. 10 min walk to Molfsee which is unfortunately only accessible (and visible) on one spot as it is surrounded by private properties.

They shoot bears, don't they?

We went to Molfsee, because we wanted to visit the open air museum (which was really worthwhile). We chose Bärenkrug as a hotel due to the positive reviews. We were not disappointed. The hotel is very comfortable, clean and well-organised - everything you may expect from a good hotel in Germany. The dinners were great, good food and great wine. The staff consists of two senior waiters - one female who is the best organised and one male, who is easily distracted - and for the rest some younger assistants who are friendly but not always competent when it comes to for instance recommending a suitable wine. You can sit very pleasantly in the garden nearby the hotel. The breakfast is good with a great variety of options. One big drawback though is that they don't serve gluten-free bread, unless you are prepared to pay E 7,50 extra, which is quite ridiculous (in other hotels they serve it for free, as we have experienced). Cooked eggs were lacking the second morning and the juice is not fresh, as you may expect from a good hotel. The hotel is located nearby a busy road, but that did not disturb our sleep. The beds are comfortable. All in all, we were very satisfied and would probably choose this hotel again when we would visit the area again.

Poor and rude service

Can't recommend this hotel at all. Unfriendly staff. Seem to be 'bothered' when you like to order anything in the restaurant. Overstaffed. Folk more interested in cleaning and chatting. Food may be ok. Zero attitude to service. English not spoken. Recommend nearby family friendly Catharinenberg.

Lovely hotel, great staff, looked after!

Lovely place. Easy to find.
All facilities (room, restaurant, surrounding land) clean and well cared for.
Great food, lovely people, kind, helpful. Lovely setting to have a hotel.
I stayed here for two nights and was made to feel welcome by all the staff.
Will be coming here again!!!
Highly recommended!!!
