Nice budget hotel at the old part of town.
I have stayed during the winter of 2019, with my wife for just on night. It a old (in the historical sense) building. If you want to avoid the big hotel chains and enjoy local and historical stay, these is a good choice. The hotel is a little bit old, but well kept and has its charms.

Not recommended!
A nightmare for us!
The double room resembled a dark chamber in the attic more than the photos of double rooms shown by the Bamberg tourist information!
Much nicer double rooms were advertised here. Ours was a long dark corridor with the beds lined up one behind the other instead of side by side. Aside from that, there was no one at the reception at the promised time for us! For telephone contact, one must take a lot of time. After a 2-minute recorded message, one is advised to try again later....
The key is obtained via a code received by email next to the entrance of the building.
In the entrance area, there is a door with the inscription 'Breakfast.' No idea why, since there is no breakfast in the hotel! There is a note indicating where one can have breakfast nearby in Bamberg.
For the price of €139 per night, we expected more.
A cancellation is only possible 2 days in advance or in case of significant deficiencies.
Despite not using one night, we had to pay 80% of the total price.
In this case, the host is the king, not the guest!

Be careful with this Hotel nobody is there
I was in Bamberg and booked this hotel on booking.com
I made mistake and booked room on wrong date
So i went to the Hotel to explain the Situation
When i got there, there is nobody there it is a key code box outside. I had a contact number so i rang them and explained mistake, they told me they have no information on me, even though i gave them a booking number
Every time i use booking.com i get an automatic conformation e-mail and so does the hotel.
I waited a few hours to make sure they get a conformation i phoned them back they still said they had no record of my booking, i therefore had to find another hotel. Then was charged for the room when i got back home. If someone had been there it could have been easily sorted out, the mix up would have been dealt with
I therefore would never use a hotel without a point of contact, i always will now use a hotel which hss a reception somebody there that can help with issues
Booking.com understood my situation and tried to get me a refund, however the hotel refused
So be careful using this hotel as there is nobody in charge at the property so if you get a problem there, there is nobody to help you

Many positives but very basic
The location is exceptional, especially if visiting the Christmas Markets. There is no elevator, but the stairs are not steep. The internet is excellent, the building is charming, my single room had 2 large windows, the bedside lighting is good with an extra electrical outlet, and the bedside table has a shelf underneath. The bathroom has classic black and white tiles. There was a very large closet that would have been better if part of it had been sectioned into shelving (cubbies). There were some issues that would prevent this hotel from being my first choice, however. There were only 8 TV channels, no minibar, no radio (next time I would bring a radio or external speaker for my phone), no means of making tea or coffee (next time I would bring something of my own), and the desk staff keep irregular hours. The desk staff do have an electric kettle and will heat water for you, but you have to catch them when they are there. If you are looking for a charming place to stay and can live with the limitations, the Alt Bamberg is a safe bet. If street noise bothers you, avoid a room on the front as there is a bar across across the street and it is very noisy on Friday and Saturday nights. Other nights were not a problem and I enjoyed the view from the front otherwise.

Location, location, location
Bamberg was on our way from Bavaria to Hesse, and we had not been there before, so I had to find a place to stay close to the old center. The Old Bamberg hotel could not have a better location: a stone's throw to the old Town Hall and a nice walk to the Cathedral. The river is two blocks away, with a bridge right at the end of the street.
As hotels go this is a basic place, our room was small but clean, with a combined bathroom/toilet. The beds were OK. The view was to the inner yard which gave us a quiet night. There is no lift so consider this when choosing the room.
The breakfast was basic, no frills but nothing was missing either.
We arrived in the afternoon, and the hotel had informed us that there is no reception between 13.00 and evening, so they gave us a code to a key-box. That worked well, but we had a problem finding the hotel in the first place. Arriving with a rental car, we had fed the address of the hotel to the navigator, and all was fine until the last moment when we were supposed to turn in to the street where the hotel is located. The entrance of the lane was blocked by a steel post!
After taking out the paper map I found the route from the other direction along many narrow streets to the hotel. When I told to the reception lady about this she shrugged her shoulders: "that way has been blocked for several years". It might be a good idea to alert arriving customers to the fact that the street address is not enough to find the hotel by car.
Parking is not possible near the hotel but there is a parking garage 500 m away where 24 hours costs 12 Eur, not bad.
