Excellent stay in Amboise B&B
My wife and I enjoyed a two-night stay in the gite or B&B just across the street from the Chateau Royale of Amboise.
There had been a mix-up with another hotel booking service, but they still honored our reservation. As mentioned by others, the stairs can be a bit daunting if you are on the 2nd or 3rd floors. We had the room on the ground floor, with access to a large sitting area. The breakfast was done on the first floor and it was fantastic - fresh local meats and cheeses along with croissants and bread; homemade jams, omelets and coffee and juice.
Genevieve was wonderful as host, although she does not speak English. I speak French so we were able to communicate.
Great location near the main square and right across the Loire River.

A novelistic step announced, a prosaic episode to forget.
No code communicated before our arrival; obliged to call a number written on the door, once blocked in front of it with our luggage. It is also the only verbal contact we had with the person in charge, who seemed confused in his speech at the time of the aperitif...
Small special request, made at the reservation for a birthday: accepted and well rated, but absolutely not honored.
While a good number of occupants rating having enjoyed a hearty breakfast, we have absolutely not seen anyone or anything about it!
Accommodation that was definitely not cleaned before our arrival: hair, bristles and pieces of toilet paper, present on the whole floor. Special mention to the toilet, particularly dirty (and equipped with toilet paper could not be more low-end).
Two of the double windows (serving as double glazing) do not close at all; since the building faces directly onto the main street and the river, the night was not of the best rest. Medium clean glass tiles (a shame with such a view).
TV fixed on a side wall and not orientable towards the bed, with two chairs singularly uncomfortable and heavily stained on all sides.
No Wi-Fi code provided or noted in evidence.
The bed advertised as a single bed for children, is only a metal bench with curved seat, very uncomfortable. Do not think about having a child over 6 sleep properly.
1 bedside lamp out of 2 does not work (already reported several times in reviews, but which only seems to bother customers!).
Given the asking price, one should expect more hygiene and standing, especially when this guest house promises to be a quality accommodation.
It's really bad that the whole service is not modeled on the tastefully made decoration (except a big white fan on the floor, which should be in a closet); so everything else is to be reviewed.
Finally, after sending a text message to the person in charge repeating all these points, asking him what he thought of it, I was left without any reply.

Not a place we can recommend or intend to return to.
The Capitainerie, in Amboise, is a very old building which is full of character, with large rooms, a river view,
a central location and plenty of hot water. However, Wifi is not available here. There is no reception so on
arrival you have to phone the owner for the access code. There is no room service given and street parking
only is available.
Q. Why were we asked to make full payment 4 weeks before arrival? A. Because if we had arrived at the
premises and saw what was offered we would not have stayed!
Rooms are accessed by flights of spiral stairs. Daylight can be seen through the uneven, wood stair treads
and there is no handrail or rope for support. These are narrow and make getting luggage into rooms
difficult.
There was no evidence of any smoke detection system in the whole building or fire extinguishers being
available. There is no fire escape facility and with windows that cannot be opened there is danger to life in
the event of a fire. Extension leads were everywhere and our electricity was intermittent.
Photos of the dining and kitchen area are clear but they don’t show you the water staining on the chairs and
the dirty condition of the oven. There didn’t appear to be oven gloves, dust pan, brush, broom, dish washer
tablets or a waste bin in the kitchen.
The modern shower cubicle, which was an integral part of our bedroom, rocked and didn’t have a handrail,
but did have curtains for privacy. There were no rails to hang used/damp towels on. The toilet was behind a
narrow door which caught on uneven tiles. The cistern had a hand written note stating where to press it for
flushing. Folded paper covered holes in the wall. Floor tiles were loose. Windows were rotten and one
could not be shut. The position of the window blinds prevented opening or closing them! The bed was not
comfortable for us. The wardrobe, which was difficult to open, was shelving. The only hanging space was 2
hooks and 2 hangers behind the door. The door security was a small padlock.
We will never return and cannot recommend it.

Good but could have been great
Excellent room and excellent location. A little bit funky, somebody else called it "shabby chic." The doors to the rooms locked with tiny little padlocks resulting in very little security. I don't see this is a big problem but some people might. Generous room, comfortable bed, creative but satisfactory bathroom.
I told the proprietor when I would arrive, precisely when I would arrive. I arrived in a heavy rainstorm, and I was standing at the front door knocking. Nobody was there fortunately I was able to reach the proprietor on the phone and he gave me the access code. There's nothing wrong with that, that's fine, except that I should not have had to stand at the door wondering what was going on. Not appropriate and not courteous. It's the responsibility of the proprietor to communicate about this.
Another client arrived when I was inside. They had the same situation, no information. Lucky for them, I was there to let them in and to explain to them how things worked.
This could have been easily fixed with better communication.

Convenient for Loire by bike very close to the center but no garage very pretty house reception by telephone no credit card
Magnificent house, very practical for Loire by bike, very close to the town center, reception by telephone with entry code, no garage for bikes, bikes in the living room!! exposed beams, beautiful decor, provide cash, no credit card
